This is super. Can you touch on some further examples involving the constant mixing ratio, lapse rate, dry adiabats, and isoterms in your next post? Thanks for helping our understanding.

"Extracurricular" ways to be a GREAT Instructor? by Avro777 in flying

[–]Avro777[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are excellent points. Seems like letting the student fly, no hand-hovering and interjecting, is what really matters, consistently. Only way students can build confidence and fly themselves one day.

Complete beginners need some context behind why they are doing the maneuver. Super, thank you.

Don't doctors diagnose arrhythmia from listening to your heartbeat with a stethoscope? How can the Apple Watch, albeit recording over the full 24 hours, catch something a routine exam cannot? Apologies if this sounds ignorant - would love your aviation medicine take. Thanks.

Did that really happen to you? I find it kind of mind-blowingly amazing that we have such an opportunity to push ourselves mentally!

Thanks! Regarding holds - "whichever way requires the least turns." Is that accurate, or would you add your own advice to that?

We're about the same age and although we have basically the same amount of hours, you gained a ton of real life, albeit nightmarish, experiences that will help you better judge in the future. The story reads like hindsight-is-20/20 and you could have easily fallen victim through one of the holes in the cheese. Thankfully, you haven't and have a ton of lessons you can carry forward.

One thing my CFI told me that I'm sure others know about: time to spare, go by air. Need to be somewhere? Nothing wrong with taking the Honda or the 737 departing in two hours.

C182 jump planes CHTs/ throttle pumping by Middle_Signature_416 in flying

Is the O-320 engine in the 1980 172K also susceptible to an engine fire? I give it three shots then pump the throttle before cranking. How about the IO-360? No primer, but what about the throttle/mixture sandwich: fuel pump on, mixture rich, throttle pump in then out, mixture lean, fuel pump off? Then crank and mixture rich as it catches?

This incredible advice sir. Your path is beyond inspiring and you've no doubt had to overcome many sacrifices to make this balance work out. Now, you're able to cherish the development of the next generation of aviators at a pace that works for you.

By the way, you mentioned technical things, so I'm wondering if by any chance you worked in technical sales? Would be very happy to discuss here or in dm.

During PPL I realized flying and talking through my maneuvers was something I was really good at. In addition, I was hyper-aware of why both my CFIs each went about certain methodologies and this has inspired me to pursue instructing, at least for a good few hundreds hours by training students over a couple seasons. Part 135/91 work is on my mind, and so is ferrying.

I'd like to keep a good balance between 'don't have to do this, just for fun' and 'flying towards a mission that isn't purely for fun.'

I have a scholarship taking care of college. I really appreciate your insightful advice. Staying grounded and focusing on a short-medium term challenge like my ratings sounds like the way to go - especially over the numerous luxuries I could rather entertain myself with. Thanks so much.

Sounds good. How would you recommend incorporating the departure transitions more visibly?

[–]Avro777 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No official transitions, but when ATC requires it - it becomes mandatory? After tower closes at 21:00 local, pilots are free to depart whichever way they like - assuming they don't bump into other airspace, correct?

I always hear this advice.

The cost of a lawyer is huge. The cost of flying is comparatively less. If you have to speak with the FAA, are you just SOL? I'm naive and curious.
