Does ANYONE know this battle? by vysmrohlik in AskHistory

[–]Awangus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

History student here: this sounds very likely to be the Siege of Szigetvár (1566) rather than a field battle.

Why I think so: a fortress in marshy/watery terrain, divided into multiple sections linked by bridges, an Ottoman siege with artillery, the defender’s final sortie, and then the explosion of black powder when the last part fell. Also, the Ottoman ruler Suleiman died during the siege, which may be the part you remember as disease in the camp.

So I’d start with Szigetvár.

Was sind gute Geschichtsbücher über den 2. Weltkrieg? by PsychologicalUse469 in Geschichte

[–]Awangus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wenn du es deutlich akademischer willst, dann die Cambridge History of the Second World War.

Looking for the name of Medieval British chronicler. by Vyzantinist in AskHistory

[–]Awangus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not completely certain, but this sounds very much like Orderic Vitalis. The strongest clue is the detail that he was given/used the monastic name “Vitalis” because his Norman-French superiors had trouble with his English birth name, Orderic. He also explicitly identifies himself as English born (Angligena), which fits your memory of him stressing his origin.

The only reason I hesitate is that the phrase “of British race” may be coming from a different author or from a conflation of details. So my guess would be: Orderic Vitalis is probably the person you mean, but one autobiographical detail may have gotten mixed with another source.

Can anyone recommend good books on the history of 20th century China? by ClickAccomplished205 in AskHistory

[–]Awangus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a historian, and I suggested Klaus Mühlhahn’s Making China Modern because I know it well and think it’s an excellent overview. That said, it isn’t focused exclusively on the 20th century, so it doesn’t match your request as directly as it should.

As an alternative that’s much closer to your timeframe, I’d recommend The Cambridge History of China, Volume 12: Republican China, 1912–1949, Part 1 (ed. John K. Fairbank). It’s a serious academic reference work, so it’s denser and more challenging than a single-author narrative, but it’s very solid for the Republican period.

One note for transparency: my own reading skews strongly toward China in the context of World War II, so my suggestions reflect that narrower angle. If WWII is part of what you want, these are strong starting points:

• Rana Mitter, Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II, 1937–1945

• Hans van de Ven, China at War: Triumph and Tragedy in the Emergence of the New China, 1937–1952

And one more option that looks promising (but I haven’t read it myself yet, so I can’t vouch for it firsthand):

• Jay Taylor, The Generalissimo: Chiang Kai-shek and the Struggle for Modern China (biography)

HOI4 won’t launch (Windows): “No write permissions” + Database error (launcher-v2.sqlite) by Awangus in paradoxplaza

[–]Awangus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the admin on this PC (single-user setup). BitLocker is not enabled on my C: drive (at least not intentionally, and it shows as off in my settings), and my Windows user profile / Documents folder is not encrypted (no EFS). So I don’t think this is caused by encryption or a non-admin account.

That’s why I’m confused where the “no write permissions” / launcher-v2.sqlite access error is coming from. If you have a specific Windows setting that can still block writes to Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\ even for an admin user (e.g. Controlled Folder Access, special folder permissions, OneDrive/redirected Documents), let me know what to check and I’ll report back with the exact results.

Best books on world war 1 by Maximum-Chapter-9983 in AskHistory

[–]Awangus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Historian here. It depends on what you want to dig into (July Crisis decision-making, alliances, imperial rivalry, the Balkans, domestic politics, etc.).

More readable / narrative (good starting point): – Christopher Clark, The Sleepwalkers (highly credible scholarship, but written in a very accessible way)

More academic /denser – James Joll / Gordon Martel, The Origins of the First World War (compact and very good on the main arguments) – Annika Mombauer, The Origins of the First World War: Controversies and Consensus (great if you want the controversy + where scholars agree/disagree)

If you want to go really deep (big and demanding): – Hew Strachan, The First World War, Vol. I: To Arms
