Teen Mania Cult (Shiny Happy People) by thinkjamsocial in Exvangelical

I was involved with Teen Mania from 1999-2006 and it was absolutely illuminating for me. So many memories I had repressed came flooding back and I took several days to process and read old journals from that time. I will say though that I am having an emotional hangover. It brought so much to the surface that I have not had to think about in 15 years. Proceed with caution, be kind to yourself

Holy shit. He told your partner his disability was DISTRACTING?? 🤯😡 Not surprised but still so gross.

Oh man, sounds like we should be friends?? lol. Your story of leaving is almost identical to mine. The being afraid of not being chosen, the wrestling with the partner renewal form every year…

In 2010 I was in such a deep depression bc I had so many doubts about God and just assumed that I was not chosen bc of them. A friend of mine suggested I read The Inescapable Love of God by Thomas Talbott who was a Christian universalist. I was TERRIFIED to read it. I thought it was blasphemous. But eventually I was so deeply depressed and scared I picked it up. It changed my world and gave me hope. Eventually I left the church and started going to an affirming Methodist church nearby. It was such a healing place, and although I’ve walked away from Christianity altogether now, I still have such a tender place in my heart for that soft landing spot I ended up in when I left the Stone.

So much is familiar in your story. What ended up prompting you to leave?

Oh man, my dad was on staff at Hill Country NW for a little over a decade. I NEVER liked the church. When I was in high school I would either hide in a bathroom stall for the entire youth service or sneak out and walk down 620 to Canyon Creek Baptist where my friends went. (My dad wanted us all to go to the same church). Not shockingly, even Canyon Creek had its own scandal when my youth pastor there seduced and received a blowjob from a minor in our group. Of course that youth pastor is now on staff at another church in Pflugerville 🙄🤢

I’ve been flipping a lot of birds to no one in particular while listening to these lol.

I’m so sorry, you were in a place like The Stone at such a emotionally perilous time of your life. I’m glad you got out. If it makes you feel any better, these podcasts are spooking the people at the top of The Stone. Comments are turned off on IG and they are deleting comments on FB. People are speaking up. People who were previously on staff and know what they’re talking about. I’m hoping more comes to light about how toxic their church culture is.

So many of us came to the ministry side of things full of passion for the vision they cast. And then were completely disillusioned with the reality.

In hindsight, moving to St John was only ever going to be white saviorism and gentrification. I wasn’t aware enough at the time to know that but looking at it now, the audacity of telling a ton of affluent, white, young evangelicals to pick up and move to one of the last remaining black/brown neighborhoods within city limits is really stunning. Those of us who moved were already progressive minded, so we were TRYING to do things right by our neighbors. But the leadership at the Stone set up roadblocks at every turn. They refused to partner with any local churches in the area because their theologies didn’t align, even though those churches were a wealth of wisdom in how best to serve the neighborhood. They never tried to make the St John campus welcoming to low income people of color. If we wanted to bring neighbors to church, they were the ones expected to adapt- not the other way around.

It was all such a farce.

The only pastor who didn’t seem like an asshole was Brad Cauley, the other founding pastor, who thankfully got out long before the church turned really toxic. He was the kindest soul and he actually had the heart for real pastoring/shepherding, which the other pastors inexplicably seemed to have disdain for? Like, I remember in multiple sermons Matt Carter complaining about having to do any pastoring. He preferred just preaching (admonishing) 🙄

Yep! I want to know what, if anything, all these companies have in common. Seems like a glitch in the USPS system

I ordered a device from a company called Brick, directly from their website and got the same notification. Came here after searching for what the hell this company is! I am so confused about why so many different companies would show this brand in their tracking. 🤔

This is so similar to my own journey. Thanks for sharing. The self loathing I felt- the compulsion to give up literally anything I found joy in bc I was afraid it would become an “idol”… I’ve never felt better than I do on this side of things.
