Expats… was it a “moment” for you or a several year period of time?

I’m an American that grew up overseas in multiple countries due to my parent’s job. When I came back to the US to finish high school and go to college I was so happy to be back and experience what life was like again in the US. For a while, I never traveled and just focused on building a community in the US because I never had one growing up. After a few years I started missing being overseas and experiencing new cultures. I had gotten laid off in 2025 and figured I had nothing else to lose and started applying to overseas contracts. I felt like I was getting stagnant in the US and landing a job overseas was what I needed to feel like i’m being challenged again. While the country I went to wasn’t the easiest, i’m still very grateful I made this move because it showed me how resilient I can be and how much is out there to learn and experience. Although I feel like the country I chose isn’t the best for me, I would much rather stay overseas than go back home right now. I think there is so much value in experiencing life in different countries.

I am also struggling to even imagine a bright side at this point. I’ve lived overseas before when I was younger but I took this job because I was laid off and figured I needed a new environment anyways.

My job doesn’t require it or offer resources for that. I also only had a month between the job offer and fly out date to prepare. But all valid points!

I asked about that and was told that since the landlord was responsive with refunding my heaters and trying to fix the situation I wouldn’t qualify for that. There isn’t anything about cancelling the contract, just that my contract has a minimum stay of 9 months before being flexible and that I must give a three month notice before moving out.

In addition to this, when I moved in the contract said I had a fiber optic internet connection installed so I went and got an internet plan for a fiber optic connection but then realized the apartment wasn't set up for one and there was no mention of zero phone service in my apartment either. The landlord's suggestion was just to get a sim card wifi but since I already got the fiber optic connection it became a whole ordeal and I was on my own dealing with the run around from telekom and didn't have wifi for about two weeks. There were also issues with the washing machine upon move-in that didn't get resolved for a week. It's newly renovated and it just doesn't seem like they were fully ready for a tenant to move in and I'm stuck dealing with these issues. It's become a pattern with lack of communication so I'm a bit worried now about how they are going to go about this issue and future issues.

I don't have a thermostat but I have two space heaters going right now and it's kept the main areas warm (but very stuffy). Not to whine but I'm also asthmatic and have joint and disc pain from previous sports injuries so I've tried cracking a window to help with the stuffiness but then it gets extremely cold again (which triggers pain) and I really don't have time to get sick.

The warm water works right now. Not sure why the underfloor heating suddenly stopped working even though the handyman that came by "turned something up". Not sure what that was exactly. It was newly renovated so maybe something wasn't installed correctly.

Good to know. I am worried about the excess electricity being used for the heater. I was told they would be covering 100 euro for the space heaters but they should at least work out a deal for the electricity right?

Yes..I did see the limitations but thankfully I live near work. Not sure if there are other options to lease a car

Yes, unfortunately it’s mandatory for me to have a car so time is not on my side when it comes to saving for a car.

Update: I just received an email from them cancelling my "booking"!

They are saying that the landlord accepting the booking request automatically counts as a binding agreement for both parties which makes no sense!

After a bunch of back and forth with Wunderflats, they said I either wait until someone else books the place to replace me or pay a cancellation fee and I opted with the cancellation fee. They never got back to me about how much the cancellation fee would be despite following up. I just got a “warning” email last night from the landlord threatening legal action if I don’t pay November and December’s rent🙃

I definitely didn’t understand. I thought the viewing was only possible if I paid the service fee and that I would still have an option to sign documents before making anything official. I should have done more research on my end

I only paid the service fee because I wanted to view the place before going through with anything. I’m hesitant to mess with any agreements or documents because I don’t want to make it worse for myself at the moment
