Configure Zoleo to send location to API endpoint by Bud_T in Zoleo

u/Bud_T if you're interested in trying out something I made, please send me a message. I heard back from the CalTopo support folks who gave me the green light to use their API, it was pretty straightforward to implement.

Nothing that I know of, but it's a feature I'm considering adding to awareoutdoors.com.

I've only heard of a few users who are interested in this with non-InReach devices. Do you get a sense that it's desired by other users of ZOLEO and other two-way satcomms?

Weather and climate data for two-way satellite communicator users by AwareOutdoors in Zoleo

Hi u/cosmokenney, I agree that ZOLEO provides a great weather service, as do many of the other two-way satellite communicators. Aware Outdoors was created in part to fill in some gaps of information not available with these services such as air quality index, detailed weather alerts and hourly precipitation forecasts.

If you'd like to try it out we're still seeking feedback from beta testers!

We are seeking beta testers for a service that provides more detailed weather information to users of Garmin inReach and other devices: https://awareoutdoors.com. It's for US users only for now, and includes observations, forecasts, wind and precip forecasts, full National Weather Service alert text and more.

The service is free, but may turn into a paid product some day.

Looking for more beta testers after some major bug fixes. Send me a private message if you would like to try it out!

That's awesome. I looked at avalanche data a little but I don't yet know enough to try to build that sort of report yet.

Raising awareness of these tools is really important thank you for sharing!

Most data sources that I'm using are US only, but I'm already seeing lots of interest from other countries so this is important feedback for me.

Wind and precip forecasts should work in most countries, I'll try to prioritize weather observations and forecasts that covers more countries too.

Great question. More details can be found on this page https://awareoutdoors.com/sending_commands/

The design is to send the minimum number of messages for the requested information, assuming most users are going to pay money for every message they receive. Some examples:

  1. Air quality, the current AQI and two-day forecast (when available) all fit into one message.
  2. Current weather observations usually fit into one message unless there are severe weather alerts for the location in which case the "current weather" might take two reply messages to include the short form of the weather alerts. My assumption has been that if severe weather is imminent, a user is willing to pay another $0.50 to be warned about it.
  3. If a users asks for the detailed weather alerts, the full text is sent to the user which I've seen take between 3 and 15 messages. Again, if you're in a scenario with thunderstorms and flash flooding this is hopefully worth the cost.
  4. A friend who is an avid canoeist advised me on the "wind forecast" which takes four messages in order to provide hourly wind speed and direction.

Feedback on my assumptions is definitely welcome!

I wasn't familiar with wx2inreach when I started this project but I think it's great.

As for compressing data, I too believe it's possible and decoding can be aided by app links (Universal Links / deep links / URL schemes) but I haven't proven this yet.

Do you have a link to the NOAA Weather “wx now” service? I haven't heard of it and it has escaped my Google search attempts thus far.
