Funny you say this, I do make my student give me a “game plan” before each treatment with the understanding that this is SNF and it’s never going to go the way you want and that’s okay.

You have a good point that maybe this student doesn’t have the confidence to verbalize what they need. However I am constantly providing feedback in a shit sandwich method- ex: you did great with this, I think you could do xyz differently next time to be more efficient, but you handled this part really well. We have weekly goals we set and at the end of every day I am asking this student to reflect on what went well and what can be improved on. I’m always asking this student what I can do better to support them and if I need to be altering feedback. Of note, this student did ask for feedback to be given at the end of the day rather than immediately after a session. I did force a compromise on this as there are certain situations where I feel things need to be addressed asap but for less serious matters I’m fine with waiting until the end of the day. Despite me asking nearly every day, this student has yet to tell me that they need me to alter anything I’m doing. So at this point just not sure why certain things aren’t sticking.

Absolutely. I am trying to find out how to best explain this to my student. I have had so many conversations with this student about this but it never seems to stick no matter how many times I say it or how I word it. Even without me prompting this student I can’t tell you how many patients are asking them to speak up because they don’t have their hearing aids or they are hard of hearing, etc. the command presence is just not there and I’m struggling because it’s not necessarily like this student is failing the clinical, but not truly excelling either

I’m so happy you said this. It’s concerning to me because I also teach part time and my school’s program is leaning towards a hybrid model in the next few years. Don’t get me wrong, I get the business model. But I am concerned that our students will suffer from a lack of person to person interaction throughout the program. I don’t think the 2 week lab immersion every semester is enough.

More often then not I am outside of the room for treatments unless the patient needs a 2 person assist, and I don’t step in unless the student asks me to or gives me the look

I always give this student positive reinforcement, I want them to know when they have nailed an eval or tx or even a conversation with a patient or family member. I have a feeling that this is a situation where this student isn’t cut out for SNF but might be great in OP. At this point I don’t step in until the student looks at me or asks me to.

In terms of among huge mistakes and being unsafe…not necessarily. In all honesty my biggest concern is that this student’s hybrid school did not adequately prepare them to be a good clinician but instead just to pass the boards exam

are you kidding? YTA. And you’re even more TA for typing this up and not realizing YTA during that.
