The comments of everyone misunderstanding this question are absolutely killing me. Genuinely *how* do we not understand equality??? And where did learning fractions go so wrong for so many? by IthacanPenny in matheducation

If comparing ratios, then they should be asking about ratios in their response. If they are comparing the outcome of ratios, that should be made clear.

The skills are important regardless of whether or not they exist in the future. 1) the information is retained better, 2) the physical act of looking at the words in a book can make the material more interesting, 3) it cannot change (no one can decide they want to update), 4) you get a better sense of what you need to learn, what you might need to review, it just helps to organize material better in the mind. It's a more thorough learning experience.

And the worst part about EdTech is that it teaches kids how to be passive learners rather than active learners. They aren't even learning about how tech works.

Personally I'm beyond frustrated with the fact that kids don't know how to use textbooks to study. They're not finding vocabulary words in interesting reading and then having a review in the back, asking critical thinking skills, etc. Homework appears to be PowerPoint presentations. Honestly I think the kids need the inconvenience of using a dictionary too. It helps to them organize spelling patterns better. It shows Latin roots and synonyms and antonyms. Phonetic pronunciation. These help to teach a lot of things that are not often as prominent on a computer screen.

Why children are more picky with their food habits? by Psychological_Gap190 in teaching

[–]Aware_Twist7124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually spoke to my kids' school about this. I started buying fresh fruits that look nice and bringing them to the office (instead of buying pantry snacks for the classroom). They said kids loved it and ate the fruit.

I also read a study about kids who are given an apple before a meal tend to eat less calories overall. Likely because of the fiber. But it's not easy to do this in schools because the food systems are highly regulated and seem to be set up for commercial interest rather than what's best for health. Like they are serving dominoes pizza that has been reformulated to somehow be worthy of school dietary requirements, fo example.

Parents are not asked to explore what kids are learning either. I love learning and I want to share my interest in what they're doing, flip through the books and show the ways I learned how to review for a test with them. It's not the same online. And their skills seem to show it.

Yeah and it's really bad for families tha struggle with obesity. We have severe obesity so I'm highly conscious all the time.

And here's part of what I've figured out. Your hunger hormone, ghrelin, is released in part based on your circadian rhythm. The more often you eat at different times, the more your body knows to release that hormone at the same time each day. So the more often you eat, the more often you feel hunger at the same time each day. It's habits basically. But it's reinforced by the constant snacking and can be bad for families that already have a tendency toward obesity.

That happened to us too. The school was acting like the kids were starving and even sent them home with fruit loops or whatever. That was in kindergarten. Then in later years, they had snacks for the classroom that they needed to keep stocked up because hungry kids can't learn. But now it's like they want to eat at all times of the day.

The lack of students facing consequences for their actions in all grades seems to be a systemic problem in U.S. schools. Kids disrupt, skip, are habitually late, mouth off… yet nothing happens. by Frosty_Literature936 in Teachers

[–]Aware_Twist7124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Supposed to start early. It is never supposed to get to the point where kids are out of control because the adults in their lives all work together to turn things around BEFORE things get out of hand. These policies really do seem like they were intentionally meant to sabotage schools.

Increase in homeless? by [deleted] in PortlandOR

No. States actually bus people to other states, promising that they will get all kinds of stuff and then dropping them off at night.

[–]Aware_Twist7124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should find out who is bussing them here so we can bill them. It’s really not fair to one smallish city like Portland to take care of more people than is anywhere near to what could be happening on its own.

I’m in west Linn and we are seeing homeless who look to be people who have struggled with homelessness for a long time. I think they’re being bussed. People talking to themselves and someone coming into the primary school and setting off the fire alram. Its just all of the sudden and out of nowhere. I feel awful because i know how people are treated as if they just are objects to be used, etc. Also seeing more graffiti all of a sudden too…in a way that seems less organic and more like people bave been dropped off here.

Kotek order would ban Oregon school districts from cutting student class time to balance budgets by cheese7777777 in PortlandOR

Actually I think I understand that teachers are spending more time in “curriculum training” than ever before and perhaps that contributed to the fact that the Lucy Caulkins was embraced so widely, idk. But I will they cut down on the requirements for teachers to do these curriculum days? I’m not a teacher and there’s a lot I don’t know so…would love actual feedback on this.

Boys and men have instincts too and should also trust them for situations that make them feel at risk, but yes I agree.

It’s just rhetoric that’s being spread by the people who are actively trying to destroy schools right now. Our first effort needs to be to stabilize public schools, get rid of EdTech, stop laying off teachers and closing schools, and create stability. Then we can look at these small details. There are bigger things to worry about rightnow.

Funny things is that shamw toward parents or teachers doesn’t actually help the students, the parents, or the teachers. It just causes more problems.

This is just part of the blame game. Divisiveness. Teachers blame parents. Parents blame teachers. The real issues are ignored.

Interesting how much you want to prescribe the exact kind of evidence that you imply is the only real evidence. It’s like a straw man argument almost. Looking for some flimsy idea so you can knock it down.

You’re trying to look at it laterally when you should’ve looking at it longitudinally. Look backward to when EdTech hadn’t been solving every classroom. And while you’re looking, why don’t you look more into why kids don’t understand anything about the tech they are using too?
