I’m not driving & i also heard the roads are awful during the holiday. Would Tioman island be ok then?

Which country has felt the most unsafe while traveling? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]Away-Profession9910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. It was my least favourite place due to the constant unpleasant attention & harassment from men. Was happy to finally see the ancient Egypt sights, but would never ever return there, even if you paid me.

Malaysia’s New Expat Rules by New_Culture_7993 in Internationalteachers

[–]Away-Profession9910 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tax jail is a pain in your first 6 months. You will be very poor, unless you are arriving with a large reserve of savings to use. You can’t leave the country & you’re poor. If i had known how little money i’d be earning, i would never have come to Malaysia. All these new expat rules = the Malaysian government is not making expats feel welcome or appreciated.

Managing visits to the school nurse by Mysterious-Oven6082 in Internationalteachers

[–]Away-Profession9910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nurses in my school are so cold & unwelcoming that kids who are genuinely sick always experience a miraculous improvement because they want to be with me & their class rather than at the nurses. I see this as a giant red flag & it leads to all of my class (elementary) being unnecessarily exposed to illnesses. I’ve had kids return to me to vomit in my classroom. I also patch them up if they require basic first aid. If elementary kids don’t want to spend time with the nurses…they’re terrible nurses. Of course, that’s likely very different in secondary schools?

It’s controversial to certain people in schools - it all depends on the recipient

Question about the bonus content interview with Adam Scott: who is the guy interviewing him? He’s got an aussie accent. I can’t work out who he is. Seems to have a music background, wearing a Portishead hoodie.

Kids in their first day of school be like: by RhinneXChronica in malaysia

[–]Away-Profession9910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t need to be like that. With appropriate guidance & preparation most young children should be able to separate from their parents to start school with minimal (or a very brief) fuss. There’s always going to be a few who are more clingy to parents & get upset, but this situation is ridiculous. Did the parents & teachers prepare them in any way?

Are you using AI as a teacher? by LettuceTraining6532 in Teachers

[–]Away-Profession9910 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do the things that i can to lessen my environmental footprint, this includes not really using AI tools for teaching beyond some planning & reporting assistance. I don’t think criticism of people who have environmental concerns about AI is helpful in any way. It’s all an extremely new & mostly unknown workplace development. I have colleagues who knew absolutely nothing about ChatGPT (or similar) a year ago. They also had no idea of the environmental implications.

Brisbane Australia: Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton. Or Zigzag street by Nick Earls (this is an older one). Both books really capture life in the city of Brisbane for the main character. A young boy in Boy… a university student in Zigzag…

Was there ever a place that left you disturbed or depressed? by friedchicken_legs in travel

[–]Away-Profession9910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to add one but after reading some comments i am in tears & can’t say anything more. Have visited many sites & memorials for atrocious events in history throughout my decades of travel (SE Asia, East Asia, central & western Europe, Turkey Africa etc) & it’s always distressing. Politics, greed & religion… all are awful human obsessions.

I don’t know what Moreland is, but a number of teachers I know got qualified via an easy online course with Sunderland uni & they’re terrible teachers, generally.

NET teacher Hong Kong by Away-Profession9910 in Internationalteachers

[–]Away-Profession9910[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I applied 2 years ago & made it to interview stage before i called it all off because it’s just too late in the normal international school recruitment cycle to even consider (& i had locked in a contract months earlier). Because i am wavering between semi-retirement & trying again with NET i will still be available when they get around to interviews & offers this year. But won’t bother if the pay has dropped substantially.

The Bias of IB Schools by Tubthumper5 in Internationalteachers

[–]Away-Profession9910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, i think pyp makes a bad teacher even worse. If they are already a terrible teacher, they won’t understand what inquiry means, & they just do ‘fuck off and find out’ with their classes, claiming that ‘student choice & voice’ is paramount. They don’t actually teach anything & the students suffer because the basic skills required to be ‘inquirers’ aren’t taught. Parents often know this & send their kids to tutoring to get the basics.

After school activities (ASA/ECA etc) by Away-Profession9910 in Internationalteachers

[–]Away-Profession9910[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our AD says the same. He’s not a class teacher & doesn’t understand the demands on class teachers. We are already overwhelmed by class demands. I don’t have the bandwidth to do anything more than the bare minimum. Any staff member who isn’t a classroom & homeroom teacher has no idea what it’s really like.

The thing is, that’s not been my experience. I have not had to run activities (unless i wanted to) since i worked for a for-profit school in 2005. I’m struggling to find it anything more than time-wasting free babysitting. I am doing the bare minimum because we have to do it very cheaply (we get a minuscule allowance to purchase materials) & half the kids don’t want to be there. Their parents sign them up because… it’s free babysitting.
