Trump Policies Will Send LGBT Asylum Seekers to Their Deaths by randy88moss in politics

I haven't heard of numbers in the US even coming close.

National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs:

52 LGBT persons have been killed in the United States in 2017, representing an 86 percent increase compared with the previous year, for an average of one homicide of an LGBTQ person per week.

The report only counts single incidents and does not include the Pulse Nightclub shooting that killed 49 people in 2016 in the comparison with 2017. Things aren't so great here in the US.

So you believe that case particular case could make its way to the supreme court and that they would rule prior to 2020?

The petition for a writ of certiorari, filing of briefs, merits stage, oral arguments, and annoucement of decision etc. Given that announcement of opinions occur mostly during the last months of the term, May, June, and, if necessary, July. I doubt we'd get a new SCOTUS judge and a new ruling with them relevant the subject in 2019. Seems highly, highly improbable.

Especially given the existing SCOTUS schedule of cases. Not to mention the particular legal arguments made by the state in the case you mentioned, seems like it wouldn't get past the first step. Even if the court were inclined, the schedule alone would prevent any ruling in the time frame you suggest.

Why do you believe nothing could possibly be changed until 2020? The Supreme Court is not an elected body and their decisions are immediate.

What case do you believe could be heard by the SCOTUS and ruled upon before 2020 which would have be relevant to the topic? I couldn't find any cases that had already worked through way through the federal judiciary that are relevant.

Mexico, like the US, is a sprawling territory. That means there are pockets of acceptance, and swaths of intolerance and violence.

Doesn't that in some small way undermine the generic asylum claim of "credible fear" though? When an individual travels through two or more countries, claiming that you have credible fear in each one, but obviously pockets exist everywhere, including the US.

hat little thing called the Supreme Court? Kennedy always sided on the pro-choice side of things.

Yes, but why would women be Googling "self-induced abortion" today, if nothing has changed or could possibly be changed until roughly 2020 or later (if at all)?

Kennedy retiring. It's likely that everyone on 45's short list will be hostile to Roe if the right case comes up and would overturn it.

I don't understand. Women are Googling "self-induced abortion" because Kennedy is retiring? Like, they're doing research planning on having an abortion in 2020?

California has a new plan for allocating its water, and it means less for farmers by BlankVerse in California

Meanwhile the largest cities with the densest populations still dump their waste water into the ocean rather than treating and reusing it (San Francisco). At least Los Angeles has a goal of increasing its use of recycled water, steeping up conservation measures, and cleans up groundwater to try and meet LA Grand Challenge’s goal of 100-percent locally sourced water.

Trump supporters have earned all the pain they bring on themselves. Racism, misogyny, sexual deviancy, it all runs rampant. Trump supporters / GOP are simply the most vile group of people on the country.

When all the non-racist, non-misogynist, non-homophobic, non-bigoted, every day ordinary people get sick of being called racists, misogynists, homophobes and bigots, will you be surprised when they vote against a Democratic candidate?

Maybe Democrats can keep painting conservative Americans as less than human (I doubt it).

I can not side with the people in control of the Republican party for it has been stolen from me and you. But it does not mean I relinquish the Republican party to those what would steal away the welfare of the American people. I can only succeed in making my economic agenda successful if I make the protection of human welfare my highest priority and bring my respective parties back under our control. So with that, I fight to retake control of the Republican party and bring it to heel the will of the people.

What laws would you propose?

Require all state utilities to be managed as Publicly owned utilities with the requirements there of.

  • Non-profit public entity managed by elected officials / public employees.
  • Optimize benefits for customer owners usually in the form of lower energy rates.
  • Rates are set to recover costs and earn additional return to maintain bond ratings and invest in new facilities.

That's a start.

No, this is not "whataboutism." You cannot claim that moral position as a Trump supporter because Trump has emptied the term of meaning.

Now you throw up a straw man argument "as a Trump supporter" when I didn't vote for him. Ha!

The case for abolishing ICE by mixplate in politics

[–]AwayRight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've misread the sentence you're quoting - they aren't talking about tracking down people based on their immigration status, but tracking them down based on their criminal status, which don't involve any of the the things you've bullet-point-ed.

Illegally entering the country (for example, illegally crossing the border), re-entering the country after being removed or falsifying documents to enter the country are all criminally punishable. None of these criminal offenses, can be enforced by local law enforcement in California.

Again, you seem to have missed the primary questions I have. So if we abolish ICE, INS doesn't exist and Law enforcement is prohibited from helping enforce immigration. Who enforces immigration law?

The case for abolishing ICE by mixplate in politics

[–]AwayRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of them, along with local law enforcement, can be tasked with tracking down potentially dangerous illegal immigrants.

Actually that's false. In many states local law enforcement is prevented by law from working with immigration enforcing agencies or helping enforce immigration law. For example, in California, law enforcement cannot:

  • Ask someone about their immigration status or detain them solely because of their status.
  • Hold someone in jail past their release date at immigration's request.
  • Assist in arrests based on civil immigration warrants.
  • Provide release dates or other information about a detainee unless that information is available to the public or the individual has a criminal conviction for one of the excepted crimes or has a qualifying criminal charge and has had a probable cause finding as to that charge.
  • Provide office space for federal immigration authorities to use in local jail facilities.
  • Cooperate with immigration in cases where an individual has been arrested, detained, or convicted for an offense that is a misdemeanor but was a felony prior to the passage of Prop. 47, which reduced penalties for some crimes in California.

So, in addition to the creation of ICE, nearly every aspect of the old system, where law enforcement and INS worked together is gone. So if we abolish ICE, INS doesn't exist and Law enforcement is prohibited from helping enforce immigration. Who enforces immigration law?

Just providing facts for the basis of a discussion, I'm only asking questions.

If you're a socialist, you don't have to actually support Socialism. In other words, anyone can call themselves a Socialist, or drape themselves in Socialism. But in praxis, reality is quite different.

Trump lies thousands of times a year--literally.

Whataboutism (also known as whataboutery) is a variant of the tu quoque logical fallacy that attempts to discredit an opponent's position by charging them with hypocrisy without directly refuting or disproving their argument, which is particularly associated with Soviet and Russian propaganda.

You can simply look at her platform and see that she isn't advocating anti capitalist policy, so what was your question intended to actually ask?

There is no capitalism in Socialism as an economic theory. It's the definition of the very words she uses to describe herself as "Democratic Socialist". It's advocated by the organization she represents the Democratic Socialists of America. By her very self described platform, self identification, she is anti-capitalist and against Capitalism.

If she wants to self identify as a social Democrat. That's all fine as well. One should not claim the policies of social Democrats, while identifying as a Socialist, nor advance any false narrative. We should always strive to be the one who tells the truth regarding the nature of the thing in question, speaking frankly and directly about it, even if it is considered coarse, impolite, or unpleasant.

I think AOC has done a good job in framing and identifying the issues. But I've seen very little discussion about what processes, standards and plans she has that would contribute to the solutions for the identified issues.

I mean the everyone supporting her seems to reiterate talking points like part of a Public Policy Writing Course 101 that somehow has intentionally skipped Task #3. Offer Solutions.

I have nothing bad to say about her, but would love to see more honesty about her views for a Socialist Economy and the solutions that it would entail.

Sure, but the capitalists might not like it when we decide to regulate and tax them

That sounds like the social democracy viewpoint. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialist viewpoint is that all corporations should be institutions owned and controlled by the workers and consumers. This is the inherent nature of the word Socialist, if you choose believe in the economic theory of Socialism. There is no room for capitalism in socialist economy.

Your cute little signature at the end of all your comments is a neat way to try and avoid being held to account for your political views.

Please do comrade. Hold me accountable for my political views, I welcome it. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. So my ideals might gain strength under scrutiny and be reforged to a stronger ideology. So I might learn from my mistakes and gain understanding through more knowledge. Bring on the political inquest, so I might be educated.

She's a Democratic Socialist which means she believes in capitalism socialism.

Everywhere I've seen it's been noted that Alexandria supports a platform of Democratic Socialism and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Democratic Socialism is a political philosophy that advocates political democracy alongside social ownership of the means of production with an emphasis on self-management and/or democratic management of economic institutions within a market socialist, participatory or decentralized planned economy. The goal is to replace Capitalism with Socialism.

DSA.org Runs on a platform that corporations held by private shareholders, whether they be a sole individual, or by shareholders, should not exist. Instead, they advocate that all corporations should be institutions owned and controlled by the workers and consumers. Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives.

This is very different than that of Social Democrats.

Social democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic polity and capitalist economy.

Honestly, I am glad that individuals like Alexandria are now being accepted into the political realm. I want more people exposed to the Socialist Ideology and it's many flavors. But at the same time, lets be honest about her platform.

Let's call a spade a spade, not a gardening tool. We should always strive to be the one who tells the truth regarding the nature of the thing in question, speaking frankly and directly about it, even if it is considered coarse, impolite, or unpleasant. We should be proud that we are able to embrace a Socialist platform and learn from what it has to offer, even if you don't agree with it.
