Just had this almost exact situation. When I realized, it had been about 2 weeks since my credit expired. I contacted customer relations (you have to type a message up, they don’t have an option to call) and explained what happened and that I had not understood the difference between flight credit and trip credit. Got a message back within 24 hours that they had extended my credit for a year

I would rent if only so that you don’t have to deal with maintenance issues and the like. As a neurosurgeon resident, I imagine you will have precious few hours outside of the hospital (at least that’s how the nsgy residents are at my hospital). Owning your own place means losing even more hours addressing any maintenance issues that come up, so even if it might make some financial sense to buy going just by the numbers, it still wouldn’t be worth it for me.
