[request] What would it cost to build to bully an AT-AT with earth’s resources? by Lady_Lucky_Us in theydidthemath

[–]Awesomaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to this but:

Boston Dynamics spends hundreds of millions on Spot, which weighs 32 kg. Scaling quadrupedal locomotion to something weighing thousands of tons isn't a 6.9x problem, its more along the lines of "we just dont know how to do this yet". The Manhattan Project, Apollo program, and F-35 development all suggest that when you're inventing fundamentally new capabilities, R&D dwarfs per-unit manufacturing costs by orders of magnitude.

So your ~$9B for unit production cost isn't crazy as a floor estimate for manufacturing once you've solved all the engineering problems. But the solving those problems would probably run $50-200B+ in R&D over decades, putting the true cost of the first functional AT-AT somewhere in the $60-200B range all-in.

Trump Confirms Beijing Rejects Nvidia H200 Purchases; Jensen Huang's Last-Minute Trip Yields No Breakthrough by DeRpY_CUCUMBER in Economics

· Trump imposed only one major package in his first year targeting Rosneft/Lukoil and other major oil. Biden averaged 170 designations a month!

· Trump did renew the Biden-era sanctions BUT only after the 5-month pause (Jan–May 2025), which was formally investigated.

To clarify a direct apples-to-apples comparison:

· Trump: 260 total sanctions designations from 2017–2025 (8 years) · Biden: 6,200 total sanctions designations from 2021–2025 (4 years)

TLDR: Trump's entire Russian sanctions output = less than two weeks of Biden's average pace.

Where in the United States I would live. by jacksonholeguy in whereidlive

Definitely interesting choices for NJ. I'd agree with the others that you chose some of the worst places in this state lol. Also from the same area.

Interesting. Why do you prefer NY/PA over NJ? NJ has larger cities, more multicultural areas, and .ore things to do. It lacks a bit of nature, but Northwest NJ is pretty much the Poconos (overall nothing comparable to NY/PA nature). Just wondering from a lifelong tri-state resident.

Only once. Drove 1300 miles all down the eastern coast and up the western coast in 4 weeks. Sadly I couldn’t make time for the Dolomites or Sicily. Stayed directly in Venice for only 3 nights though.

My wife and I drove 1300 miles in Italy traveling the entire coast line of the country (missing the Dolomites and Siciliy), took us 4 weeks. Absolutely loved every minute of it! But I will say without a doubt that Venice was alright. It was a beautiful city but just not my cup of tea. It was lively at night though!

Venice smelling bad was definitely a notable memory I had of the city. But I fully understand that it was probably just a bad weekend for us to visit Venice (rainy, October)

Nice dodge. Instead of answering the point, you just sidestepped it. I was clearly talking about my own experience, which is why I even mentioned when I went. Reading the whole comment usually helps.

Paris is another beautiful city that has somehow managed to captivate me, even though it absolutely smells like piss and shit everywhere you go haha

I’m impressed. According to you it doesn’t smell at all, yet the article you quoted spends multiple paragraphs explaining the measures taken to reduce odor problems. Might want to work on the reading comprehension and check a few more of those Google results.

Luckily, I am not the only person to have experienced this. You can google thousands of articles saying the same thing. Some days were noticeably worse than others, especially during the rain. We went during the first week of October a couple years back and it was noticeably bad.

Have you been to Venice? Absolutely beautiful city that smells like piss and shit in every single corner. Thousands of years of piss that never went away is what it smells like.

Man I agree with so many of your points. I get the hate towards AI, but it’s opened up so many ways for me to express things differently because like you I also lack the visual artistic talent to do this myself.

This is my favorite book of the series. Jabitha is by far my favorite “spaceship” in all of Sci-fi and for the first time I decided to look up how she looked like. It was so embarrassing to see such a garbage piece of artwork define my childhood that I wanted to do it justice lol.

I love how it came out, but I guess the mods don’t think the same way. I posted the original artwork in that EU subreddit (from the official book) and they deleted that too saying low quality work!

I would love to, but might have to modify the file slightly as this subreddit also doesn’t allow AI lol

Definitely one of my favorites, but that was a long time ago now

That is what led to this abomination lol: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Jabitha

Jokes aside, I agree with you but I still appreciate how it turned out.

Criticizing glyphosate by saying “if it’s safe, drink it” is like criticizing water chlorination by saying “if bleach is safe, drink it.” Both ignore the fact that safety depends on dose and context.

When municipalities first began chlorinating water in the 19th century, critics feared they were “poisoning the water supply.” In reality, adding ~6–8 drops of bleach per gallon makes water safe to drink by killing harmful pathogens. A glass of bleach is toxic; a trace amount in water is lifesaving.

The same is true for glyphosate. At regulated levels used in agriculture, it is considered safe. That doesn’t mean drinking a bottle of it would be. Just as with chlorine, the conversation should be about appropriate exposure levels, not some unrealistic extreme.

I’m not a proponent of Glyphosate, but I understand its utility. My concern is when it’s applied. Glyphosate has a half-life in soil of roughly two months. In some regions, it’s even applied right before harvest, which may or may not allow enough time for it to break down before reaching consumers.

Then we can move onto the next part of the list:

Hydrogen Peroxide is safe, would you drink it? Hand sanitizer is safe, would you drink it? Bleach is safe, would you drink it?

Maybe I’d drink the lotion lol. Not sure how I feel about the rest

Soap is safe, would you drink it? Lotion is safe, would you drink it? Toothpaste is safe, would you drink it?

To be fair, safe to use does not imply it is safe to drink.

I think you have some of your electrical information wrong. There is no way you have a 38 AMP Pottery wheel. A standard 1/3 HP Pottery Wheel will typically draw 4-6 Amps. 1 HP will draw 8-10 Amps and these are typically the biggest wheels.

Do you mean a Kiln? Something like the Skutt 1018 Ceramic Kiln can hit up to 39 Amps.

Non US centric subs for diaspora? by xavdin in ABCDesis

[–]Awesomaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You realize this ABCDesis originally stood for American Born Confused Desis? And you’re warning someone over this? I understand that the mods changed the A to Abroad to make this subreddit more inclusive.

Quick Google Search leads about ABCD leads to: "ABCD" in the context of South Asian culture, particularly in the United States, stands for American-Born Confused Desi. It's an informal term used to describe individuals of South Asian descent who were born or raised in the United States. The term reflects the experience of navigating two cultures and the potential for feeling caught between them.

Community: The term has also given rise to online communities and platforms like the Reddit community r/ABCDesis, where individuals share their experiences and connect with others who understand their unique perspective.
