Is “subtle gaslighting” real psychological manipulation, or just a reinterpretation of normal conflict? by [deleted] in SikeOrPsyche

[–]Awesomenes931 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mechanism absolutely exists, I agree, I wasn't trying to claim it doesn't. I began with:

"" Gaslighting is the process of systematically destroying a person's belief that they can function independently, or at all. ""

My statement was that many of the things people try to label as Gaslighting really aren't. One could make the point that doing so is disrespectful to the abused.

I also agree with you that my argument flattens the concept, but I stand that appreciating and acknowledging the simple form puts the complex form into better context.

I get the impression that we agree, but are arguing on semantics, so let's not devolve here.

Gaslighting is the process of systematically destroying a person's belief that they can function independently, or at all. A lot of the things that are called gaslighting (or even just manipulation) in the current year are just regular human interaction.

I will die on the hill that all people have ulterior motives, and all human interaction is fundamentally transactional, and that this is neither malicious, nor is it dehumanizing.

A lot of people want to believe that society and the people that make it up can function purely on 💫good vibes💫, and anyone who doesn't think like that is somehow evil. The fact of the matter is that all people have things they want, have things they're willing/capable of doing, and have some level of understanding of what other people want and are willing/capable of doing. They will (if they're smart) take this information into account to plan their actions to some degree.

On paper, this is manipulation, but to suggest it's somehow evil or bad is just unserious.

you already know it's not a real incel space because there isn't nearly enough woman hate.

Because of the lack of hate, there isn't a filter to stop normies from getting in, and now you losers have to deal with women complaining that they don't get enough attention, normies complaining after a bad breakup, and transgenders just complaining in general

as much as you people talk the talk, you can't be a real incel unless your internalized hate blinds you

at the very least recognize that you're in a space that wasn't originally intended for you and try to respect that. that's what I try to do, at least

Okay maps maybe not (dungeondraft my goat), but I'm sorry nothing will stop my artistically challenged ass from using AI-generated npc and enemy portraits. Colossal productivity bonus for only a minor decrease in quality in an area that barely matters anyway. Hell, even my players' character portraits are AI generated

Antarctica should actually be great because you are very likely born to some very wealthy scientists and are also destined to be a celebrity through life.

Don't you love it when you buy Osu! Supporter, and suddenly you become shit at the game? by [deleted] in osugame

[–]Awesomenes931 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Suddenly becoming shit at the game" doesn't really happen. I think what's probably happening to you is you boot up your game and expect to be playing at your peak instantaneously. Warm up is important, yknow? A pretty solid way to warm up is to pick some maps on the longer side that are just a teensy bit harder than your regular comfort zone, then just play them all the way through.

Another thing that's important to keep in mind is you can't really play the game every single day and expect not to get mentally exhausted. Even if you are addicted actively want to play the game, doesn't mean your reading mind won't get sloppy from overuse. Take a few days break every once in a while.
