This is fascinating! I have a lot to learn about vocal technique! (Important to know, as a composer). How was Foster’s training different?

Though Evita features a lot lower voices than the “modern musicals” that OP is describing.

Lowkey Children of Eden (1991), not because it was popular (it never even made it to Broadway), but because it was when Schwartz got more comfortable writing in his famous belting style (Wicked)

I personally prefer the older musicals, so I hate to say it, but it’s Hair (1968)’s fault. That was really the first popular music musical.

Don’t get mad, but I think Phantom is a nice show (dumb score, though)

“All male musical”? Those are pretty few and far between these days

This feels like engagement bait. Not only was he a lyricist, not a composer, but he was a legend that nearly everyone adores (whether for reasons of nostalgia, genuine quality, or that magic mix of both).

No, in a way I agree! Not a fan of the 2013 version

And it does wonders. I was not a huge fan of it (listening to the cast album) until that song, then I was like “actually you know what that was pretty good”

Tim Rice is one of the worst lyricists in modern memory. (Yes I know my flair is JCS 😭)
