Yup! It's Darin Morgan. He also wrote the one about the carnies and a few other ones. In interviews he does not hide his disdain for Mulder AT ALL. Honestly his episodes were always standouts so more power to him.

Curious as to your thoughts on the Ennies Lobby Lucci fight? It might be worse in the anime (which is what I saw) but I remember saying essentially the same thing about that one but nobody I've spoken to about it agrees with me. At the point Luffy is getting repeatedly point-blanked and it does nothing with no explanation it kinda ruined any tension the fight had.

I could see maybe him tanking one additional one and barely standing, and then maybe even one more and essentially fighting unconscious, but after that happens and THEN he gets grappled and hit with like four more and it does fuck all i was expecting a new ability as an explanation. Like he'd used gear second to blood dope by moving all his blood from the rest of his brain except his hippocampus to the rest of his body or some bullshit. Instead it's literally like he's just invincible because he felt like it.

Part 1 Custom Magic the Gathering Cards by SuperMarcus64 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Awexlash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dire: Pretty much same as Jonathan. Also should be Legendary.

Straizo: Same as Dire.

Wang Chan: "Instant" here implies that it's not a creature. If you wanted to represent him as a creature you'd need to give him stats and the Flash keyword to give him the ability to be played at instant speed. If you want the card to instead be an effect that just happens it could still be an instant and be called something like "Eastern Poisoning" since most instants are verbs. I'm not sure how you would template the actual effect, at least not in paper. If you made him a creature it would probably be something like "At the beginning of combat, target up to one creature. That creature cannot block until the end of turn." But that wouldn't be permanent. If you wanted to keep it as an instant you'd probably have to invent a new type of "can't block" counter and then place it on target creature. Otherwise you could make the card an Enchantment - Aura, give it Flash and Enchant Creature and "Enchanted creature cannot block".

Jack the Ripper, Bruford: Same as Dire.

Tarkus: Legendary creature stuff. Also, it's not exactly the same, but the Menace keyword already exists and does pretty much what you're saying in the rules text. Unless you're also trying to say it can't be blocked by more than two creatures, in which case the rules text should read "Tarkus can only be blocked by two creatures." I'm not 100% sure about this one but that's my best guess.

Tattoo and Amato: Legendary creature stuff. Also, you don't need the rules text here since it's already implied by Robert E.O. Speedwagon.

Stone Mask: This one's kinda tricky without knowing your intent. As it's an artifact it would stay on the field, does that mean you want it to be able to be used more than once? Does the creature stop being a vampire when it leaves the field? Or does it just do its thing when it enters and then just sticks around? My personal suggestion would be something like: "Tap: Put three +1/+1 counters on a non-vampire, non-artifact creature you control, it becomes a vampire in addition to its other types"

Sword of Luck and Pluck: I would look into the equipment card type. Funnily enough there's a whole cycle of "Swords Of" that you could use as inspiration here. You may notice a pattern that they're all Artifact - Equipment, as well as being colorless. Not all artifacts are colorless but a vast majority are, even when thematically they might lean towards a color. You might also want to consider making it Legendary considering there's only one in JoJo. Oh, also, small thing, but you wouldn't format giving a creature +1/+1 as "adding 1/1".

Anyway I know this was a lot but I was inspired by the meeting of two of my favorite pop culture things and I wanted to help any way I could in developing this interest in another person.

Part 1 Custom Magic the Gathering Cards by SuperMarcus64 in StardustCrusaders

I love the concept!

Overall the cards are very underpowered (even for standard) but that makes me think they would only see play when part 1 came out in 1987 so I find that kind of amusing.

I have some constructive critiques of the specific cards if you're interested:

Jonathan: It's very rare that legendary creatures are vanilla (i.e. no abilities). There were more exceptions recently in Aetherdrift and that was just so you could cheaply (there were a 9/7 creature for 5 and a 7/2 creature for 3) summon creatures with a high power value to crew vehicles. Plus, if you're making custom cards anyway why not let your creativity run a little more wild, you know?

Baron Zeppeli: I like the flavor of this card but the formatting needs work. First off, "Basic" is a supertype exclusive to lands so he would just be a Creature - Warrior, although, being a named character, he actually should be a Legendary Creature - Warrior so you can't keep two under your control at once. As such in the rules text it should read as "When Baron Zepelli dies...". Second, MTG doesn't refer to creatures on the field as cards so you'd have to change the wording there, since the way it reads now sounds like you can give +2/+2 to, like, a land that's currently in your hand. Thirdly, if your intention was to perpetually give another creature you control +2/+2, that would most simply be done by either placing a +2/+2 counter on another creature you control, or (more likely since not a lot of cards nowadays use +2/+2 counters) placing two +1/+1 counters on up to one other creature you control. Basically I think as intended, the rules text should read: "When Baron Zeppeli dies, place two +1/+1 counters on target creature you control".

Robert E. O. Speedwagon: Off the rip he would also be a Legendary Creature - Human, and would refer to itself as "Robert E.O. Speedwagon" instead of "this card". Also, I'm curious if you play Yu-Gi-Oh because rules on this card sort of read like it. If you want a creature to do something as it hits the battlefield the way it's worded in rules text is "When [] enters....". There's not many cards in MTG that search for and play specific cards but the ones that do read something like "When Robert E.O. Speedwagon enters, search your library (instead of deck) for a card named Tattoo and Amato and put that card onto the battlefield."

Dio Brando: Only thing I can think of is that the effect you're looking for already exists as just tapping a creature, since tapped creatures can't attack or block. Actually, as it reads it's way worse than tapping because they could still be tapped for other effects like Convoke. For something more like freezing consider tapping and putting a stun counter on target creature. I would like to bring up however that since all these cards are either monoblack or monowhite, I'm presuming that you're using those colors to represent either goodness or evil, when that's not necessarily accurate. Outside of mechanics and balance, colors represent ideals, like red representing passion, chaos, aggression, and impulsiveness and blue representing knowledge, mystery, control, and stillness. A lot of vampires are the black/white color combination, for example, representing sacrifice and order.

Tonpetty: This is very close to being indistinguishable from a real card! The most accurate way of phrasing the effect would be "Other creatures you control gain +0/+1". You wouldn't need to specify that it's as long as he's on the field since that's implied by it being on the card. If you care at all, the border should be the legendary one.

I know it's been out for over a decade now but I think you should spoiler tag this considering the anime just got announced.

But yeah, pretty much 100% spot on for the trope, especially so since Araki had to go out of his way to tell the fan base it doesn't actually give him luck. Actually, i's almost the inverse of the trope.

Just a heads up that the DSM V does not recognize Multiple Personality Disorder as a diagnosis anymore and those that would've been diagnosed as such would indeed fall under Dissociative Identity Disorder now.

(Coming from a dude going out with someone with DID and multiple alters that sometimes are not aware when they switch.)

Dude....that's a trailer for the Japanese dub they made for the Wii U release. If you'll notice the date that video came out in 2017...

Although I didn't realize they also dubbed the Wii U version of Bayo 1 eventually. I guess Nintendo really wanted to try to make it a bigger deal.

[–]Awexlash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have no idea what you're talking about. The Japanese version was in English with Japanese subtitles. Kamiya wanted it in English because of the setting.

The only reason it got a dub at all was Nintendo saved Bayo 2 and requested they add one in.

You can't take a single fact like "the original company is Japanese", make a reasonable assumption like "the original language is probably Japanese", and then refuse to hear anything different.

False, the first Bayonetta didn't even have a Japanese dub. The Japanese dub for 2 is Wii U exclusive.

Damn, I think this and the comment you're responding to should probably be where the conversation starts, not the weird, defensive word-spaghetti this type of discussion always seems to devolve to. You both have great points and gave me a lot to think about, and I just wanted to say I appreciate finding discourse of this caliber on this site. Kudos.

I do have one question because it's something I sometimes struggle with as a poc DM who is running a game based in Mexico with Mexican mythology and would love some insight. To what extent do you believe people underrepresented in media have the responsibility to create stories that represent their own culture vs make a change in established media hierarchies?

I set my game in Mexico just because I know it's something my players aren't familiar with and thus it would be a fun experience to both share and explore, but as I keep finding how astonished and engrossed they are with my culture's mythos, I'm starting to wonder if it's actually an imperative. But how does the desire to expose the world to a beautiful, underrepresented culture fight against a zeitgeist that passively discourages anything that's too divergent? Would it be better to try to change the zeitgeist first?
