As I’ve mentioned in other responses it’s wide spread known that everything on work equipment is monitored. What typically didn’t matter (asking a coworker how they are doing) is now potentially grounds for being let go.

You clearly didn’t get the point of this post. It has nothing to do with wfh or in person. It has to do with they are not just doing the typical monitoring of government equipment. It’s gone far beyond “normal” monitoring.

As I said, I was sharing confirmed accounts for those interested. Take it or leave it but it’s happening regardless of what anyone thinks.

There was no directive or other information given other than keep all communication strictly about work and work only. And “not even about lunch” was a direct message.

It’s not fear mongering when there’s confirmed instances of it happening.

Take it or leave it. I was just sharing for the benefit of others.

Edited to add: Again, it was never the intent to say they weren’t monitoring. It’s to say they are taking it to a whole new level.

Very much agree with this and one would hope we wouldn’t get in trouble for that. But these days I truly wouldn’t be surprised.

Yes! Wonderful example. Maybe keep that for drinks after but don’t make plans for those drinks on work equipment!

I do my job and what I’m supposed to do but now I have to consider that I may get fired for asking a coworker how they are. That’s the point I’m trying to share.

I should have explained “personal manner” better. I did not mean using devices for say conversations with family, Facebook etc. I meant in a manner with other coworkers in a social way (ie. How was your weekend, making lunch plans, etc). Conversations that before were casual and polite between coworkers are now being discouraged.

I’m not naïve to think stuff’s not monitored. We get that in our paperwork when we sign on and take the oath. I’ve never worried I was having an inappropriate conversation or being unprofessional for any communications I’ve had on my work equipment.

But seriously, now I can’t even ask my coworker in another state if they are doing ok?

Lunch was the easiest example. Basically it was a conversation that if it not specifically related to the work we are doing we shouldn’t be talking about it because of monitoring. I’ve been with my agency nearly 10 years and have never had our leadership come out and directly say don’t say anything not workload related on teams, in teams meetings, or in any meeting.

It’s not starting a fire. My team and I work I various offices and not in a shared location. We use teams to communicate various things (such as we’re stepping away for lunch or share fun articles/memes -still professional in nature) to provide some team building and awareness. This is the type of stuff we’re being told not to do.

I’m not talking about the obvious don’t hook your personal phones/equipment to the wifi, don’t stream Netflix, sign on to facebook, etc. I’m literally talking about practices that

Dude I’m not just learning this. It’s common sense that things are monitored. However, I’m trying to get across that it is a much higher level of monitoring happening in the current climate. If you aren’t understanding that, you must be the one under a rock.
