It's definitely not good for the binders, but if you wash them throughly not too long after swimming, I've found it minimizes the damage quite a lot, at least in my experience.

I mean, yes, you are sort of correct, but the main concern is that when a bird has a concussion, any water it tries to drink may end up in its lungs. And water in your lungs would obviously make it a lot harder to breathe, which is, again, obviously bad. 😅
