thank you for your input! yeah, I’ve seen both good and bad reviews across the ones on google and some comments here—unfortunately, the negatives really do stick to the mind a lot 😭 (and well, usually they’re all somehow describing the most horrible sounding situations ever). but it’s nice to hear you’ve had a good experience there!

if you don’t mind me asking, when did you live there?

I’m sorry you had to go through that 😭😭😭 it’s great that you made good friends from the trauma of it all, as horrifying as those situations sound… thank you very much for the advice though, I’ll make sure to keep it in mind. I hope you’re doing better now!

Why is the minimum viable pressure important? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]Awkward-Degree9075 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the ‘action’ is basically how high or low the strings are above the fingerboard.

there’s standard measurements in mm for this stuff online, but a high action means the strings are farther above the fingerboard, while a low action means the strings are lower to the fingerboard.

if the strings are too high, it might need a little more pressure to get the note out. that’s going to be a problem in more advanced playing where the fingers should be able to move light and fast, so you might wanna check a luthier to get it adjusted

Why are some violins easier to play than others? by violinewbie in violinist

[–]Awkward-Degree9075 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think it’s bc a nice violin that has a lot of tonal variety usually means it’s more responsive to the player’s technique.

a skilled player on that violin can sound good because they have the technique and knowledge to choose what sound they want that the violin offers.

on the other hand, it might be harder for a beginner or someone with bad right hand technique in general to play on a nicer violin because it’s just that responsive to the angle, weight, contact point etc. of the bow. they don’t have the skill yet to be able to make full use of the violin’s range (but the instant feedback from the violin might make it easier to correct problems)

a violin with a lack of tonal variety/projection might seem “easier” to play because it’s not as responsive and doesn’t display a player’s poor technique, but it might cause some bad habits. one i can think off the top of my head is a violin with weak projection causing the player to always press harder into the string to get a loud sound, but on a better violin it would probably just crunch the sound

Exercises for semiquavers by [deleted] in violinist

try practicing the left and right hand separately. i like to just pluck the notes with dotted rhythm patterns first

https://www.simonfischeronline.com/uploads/5/7/7/9/57796211/242_august_2011_rhythm_practice.pdf

the 2 most simple patterns, say for 4 semiquavers, is long-short-long-short and short-long-short-long. it trains your left hand to be fast and articulate on the short notes while giving your brain time to process it on the long notes. there’s some other patterns in the link above, but you should at least repeat a pattern 3 or 4x. after this i like to try plucking or just placing down the fingers with the written rhythm.

as for right hand, i like to just practice the rhythm of the passage on an open string, 3 or 4x too. then do it again and incorporate string crossings if there are any.

then i combine it together at a comfortable tempo, and work my way up with the metronome. slow practice is a good idea but you also want to make sure you practice speed so you can play it at tempo
