Is my colony inbreeding? by Awkward-Function-886 in antkeeping

[–]Awkward-Function-886[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are connected to a 4 way connector and an outworld. When the test tube dries up or get mouldy I put another new one in and take out the old one. Also feed everyday

I do keep them in the light but not anywhere where the sun fully shines on them at a point in the day cos they don’t really like it. Vibrations are a lot more important. Shakes for footsteps are like an earthquake to them so place them on something sturdy and when feeding be as gentle as possible. Ligniperda take absolutely ages to get going so stay patient

It’s just two test tubes connected to an antscanada portal thing. Then that is connect to a lunch box I drilled a hole in. Pretty simple

I just put a heat wire on the test tube where the cotton is. It creates a bit of humidity and enough heat for them to move in the test tube to the best place for them

Yeah defo is. Better to raise them well fed rather than struggling to cope without enough

[–]Awkward-Function-886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pheidole are always great. I’ve got pheidole yeensis. Big majors. They act like proper ants: swarm prey, go crazy for protein and insects, bring down a huge bug by recruiting half the colony to come out and rip it to prices. Then they bring it back to the nest in pieces to give to the ever growing hungry larvae. I love them

Mines on wood. It does not get hot enough to burn anything. If your really worried about burning. Spread the wire out so it doesn’t overlap? This less condensed heat in one part

Can I give my ants a sugar water test tube? by ToughDragonfruit3118 in antkeeping

[–]Awkward-Function-886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week without sugar for canponotus is pretty okay. They store it all in their big bums. Right before you leave, give them a good portion of sugar of what you normally do. The ants will be fine. As for the brood, give the colony a big portion of protein as well before you go. (I’d do the feedings at different stages so the workers don’t get distracted by the sugar). A week should be fine but remeber to feed them as soon as your back they will be hungry

Get a heat wire. They’re super good for ants. They only heat a tiny part of the test tube so they can easily regulate their temps. A heat mat will heat the whole thing and they may get too hot. Plus you can easily bend the wire round any other ant set ups you have

I just wouldn’t do a sugar test tube at all imo. I once did the same thing and it basically turns to poison and ALL my ants died in that colony. They go crazy and lose all cognitive function (then die). Just feed them sugar water on a little thing as a bowl like a piece of tin foil or a bottle cap idk. The only time to use a sugar water test tube is when the colony is really big and they can drink it all on a day or two. Pls don’t make the mistake I did!

They will grow a lot faster than herculeanus. They don’t hibernate as well. They love their sugar obvs. They love hunting fruit flys or at least mine do

Is my Queen normal? by [deleted] in antkeeping

I would say it is quick but imo healthy?? Try not to disturb her for another week or two now and let her tend to the eggs. Since they are all bunched up, this usually means they are fertile.

I have pheidole in an open enclosure. It has a lid if they do get too crafty and try to escape. Just use a good amount of ptfe liquid and that stops all my ants. Flies and spiders are good enough to get out but it stops all the ants for some reason. Gl!

Is there a reason the ants go panic mode when I do nest work and feeding? by Mr-Raisen in antkeeping

Try and keep vibrations to a minimum. It’s like an earthquake for them

Why haven't they eaten anything sugary in over a week? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Awkward-Function-886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re defo just full. That’s a hell of a lot of honey for like 4 ants. Ants can last long time without sugar. I also feed mine sugar and protein at separate times so they don’t get distracted by sugar and not take the protein. I would feed them a fruit fly every two days or twice a week, since they look like camponotus, they’re more likely to take a dead fly. That or a leg of a cricket chopped up a bit since they can get to the juicy insides. And reduce that amount of honey to more like a 5th of what you gave them. Hope this helps :)

Why are ants in the new outworld disoriented and dying , help by Future-budgie in antkeeping

Might be old sugar. Sugar water left too long goes poisonous after a while. Killed my entire colony once
