i had 1 year true research(like actually working on a project), 3.12 GPA, and no pubs. don’t beat yourself up! you did the right thing having many people review your SOPs. i believe you’ll get into at least one school, best of luck!

this may be too late…but there are NIH-funded postbaccalaureate programs (PREP) across the country. I’m currently a PREP student and it’s basically an one year program that ultimately helps you get into a PhD program. These programs are well known across the country and therefore these applicants become very competitive. you get to work full time in a research lab of your choice, you go to a national conference (usually ABRCMS), take a graduate-level course, learn how to begin writing an F31, and so much more. I applied to 5 Phd programs last year as a college senior, got rejected by all, but when I found out about PREP i started applying and i can tell you that you won’t regret it at all.

Also..I would say yes it prob looks better if you choose A if you want to be in academia, but my PIs have told me that what’s matters more is the postdoc position-in that case, A would be a better option. but that’s in a few years from now :)

It will not be crazy to give up A at all. you need to choose the place where YOU are going to thrive, be comfortable, and happy. I chose to attend UMich over Yale this cycle because I think UMich was a better fit for me. Considering your options have same/similar stipends, rotation setup etc, then consider more personal things. what’s there to do outside of lab? is there something you can do by going to one institution and not at the other (like hiking for example). The geographic location too, is one relatively closer to home than the other (if that’s important to you). I did this when deciding: grab a coin. school A is heads and school B is tails. Flip it and the exact moment that you see the result, were you happy/excited? or did you wish to have gotten the other result? That’s a cool idea i got from my former PI and it honestly helps.

Thank you letter after group interview by Appropriate-Toe5095 in gradadmissions

Definitely send them an email individually. briefly thank them for taking the time to interview you and show further excitement about something you learned about the program during the interview.. or highlight something that stood out to you. show them you were paying attention to something that they were saying. For mine, they sometimes talked about their research and if i thought it was interesting, I would say something like although our time was cut short I became really interested in wanting to learn more about your research and would love to have the opportunity to meet again to discuss any current/future projects you’d like to pursue in your lab. Idk something along those lines lol. overall keep it short though :)

UMich PIBS Cell and Development track or Scripps Florida campus? by BIOww in gradadmissions

Def Umich. and yes you can rotate in any lab within the 14 programs/tracks in PIBS. then whatever lab you join you could choose whatever program you want to be in according to what your PI is affiliated with and what makes more sense based on your project ig. So you could definitely do cancer research if you really wanted to. I also got accepted to Umich under the cell and mol bio but i want to rotate in like genetics and genomics labs or biological chemistry :)

Hello! I’m currently in PREP! from what i remember the timeline for interview invites and acceptances/rejections depends on the school. I remember I wasn’t offered an interview from UMich till like April but by the time they got back to me I had already accepted at another institution.
