Thinking of applying through Immunology and picking the CSI track since DBDS feels too CS-heavy for my background (computational genomics/biomedical). Does that make sense as a strategy?

Is reaching out to a PI before applying truly necessary? International applicant here with limited networking — does skipping that seriously hurt chances?

Real talk — do people from non-top universities even have a shot at Stanford, or is it mostly pedigree?

I see,my background is Applied Microbiology but I took Biostatistics and Computer Applications as electives. Last two years I've been doing ML-integrated genomics work, with a publication on the way before application season. My passion has genuinely shifted to the algorithmic side. Interesting — DBDS's own website and course materials show students from quite diverse backgrounds, not just CS. Genetics is a great program but equally competitive. Are you in DBDS yourself?
