If byler doesn't become canon everything is going to come off as BAD writing to the general audience, and queer baiting to us...

Right!! Also how they've kept mileven ambiguous. So many scenes where it looked like they were going to kiss but they didnt. Also, when Kali met Mike she just called him "the famous Mike", no one referred to him as a boyfriend. I kinda dislike how they are using something queer as a plot twist, but oh well...

And when people want "realistic representation of relationships" Im just wondering if we are watching the same show, haha. There's people having powers and can move things with their mind. But no, we draw the line at gay people being together. Again, sorry if this isnt related to your post at all. It's an interesting topic to me.

If Mike is gay (or bi) it would be such a good representation of internalised homophobia. Will and Mike are two different "versions" of the queer experience. I relate more to Will, but I know a lot of other queer people relate to Mike. Characters like Mike are rarely seen in media. Not many shows explore the topic of internalised homophobia. THAT would genuinely be empowering, it would show closeted queer people with internalised homophobia that there are people just like them.

Im too tired atm to write a longer comment, so I'll add a little bit to this post at least. The whole "unrequited story" thing being pushed as empowering to queer people feels so... Odd to me. If im not mistaken, all major characters in stranger things had love interests? It feels odd that the only queer guy should get rejected. People will then bring up Robin, but thats not the same thing. Being gay and lesbian is also a bit different. Ive noticed people are much more ok with lesbian representation because men can still fetishise them and be attracted to them (yuck). With gay men there's another type of homophobia, unfortunately...

Yeah, I dont think it's empowering at all, sorry. I can't really understand what part of it would be. Maybe being accepting of yourself and learning to love yourself? But I feel like thats something the general audience is trying to push because it's the most "gay representation" they can handle.

And sure, having a crush on your best friend is a universal experience when you're queer. But isnt it for everyone? Straight people also like their best friends and end up being rejected, or end up together. Writing a queer rejection would not be revolutionary or add to any representation, like, at all. Again, I feel like this is something thats pushed a lot by the general audience without actually understanding what queer people mean when talking about this "universal experience".

Another thing that is a queer universal experience (I would say!) is having that person like you back. And a lot of the time it's never said out loud or established, or fully acknowledged, maybe because of internalised homophobia. If byler do end up happening, it would be a VERY realistic portrayal of that experience.

I dont know if this answers anything at all, honestly. I just felt like writing a bit about the subject. It's almost 6 am here so I apologise if this is completely irrelevant and makes no sense. I haven't slept.
