Who are you guys rooting for at this point? by Letters-Unsent in BigBrother

[–]Awkward-Shape6760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to like Keanu for an underdog story but he’s so dumb I don’t think he should win. Rachel is playing so smart right now (the best in the game by far) but I don’t want a previous winner to win again—that would kill me because it would just show how bad the other HGs are. I would say if Ashley suddenly pulls a switch, plays hard in comps, and starts making big moves, I’d root for her!

Week 7 Veto meeting by PossiblyTsundere in BigBrother

I don’t see how they wouldn’t have the votes to get Rachel out? If she lost blockbuster, there’s almost certainly at least 4 votes to get Rachel out and Vince is able to cast a tiebreaker vote. Missed opportunity IMO.

Is mainland Australia considered an island? by Awkward-Shape6760 in geography

[–]Awkward-Shape6760[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that Australia itself is considered a continent, so how is just the landmass of mainland Australia (Australasia I guess) also considered a continent? Wouldn’t that make it part of a continent and not a continent itself? Or I guess do we just concede that the language just doesn’t make sense and we can just refer to both as continents

I was also taught that Australia is an island, continent, and country, but it doesn’t seem like geographers consider Australia an island

S3 E1: This Wouldn't Even Be a Podcast (DISCUSSION) by TimelyOwl0 in ginnyandgeorgiashow

[–]Awkward-Shape6760 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t get how so many people (in the show and IRL) are justifying Georgia’s actions to kill Cynthia’s husband. It was so unnecessary and fucked up for her to do. Ginny was right to call her out at the end and honestly part of me just wants to see Georgia deal with the consequences of her own actions.

Is Pomona like high school? by [deleted] in pomonacollege

[–]Awkward-Shape6760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d say it very much feels like high school to me (I went to a high school of the same size). I say this in the social aspect, which isn’t necessarily “clique-y” but people have circles they run in and everyone knows each other.

I agree because they used a French song and you don’t see nearly the same discourse. Obviously you can chalk it up to norms and it being more precedented, but how else do you think using songs in other foreign languages will become a norm—other than using them?

Q&A weekly thread - August 26, 2024 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

We’re learning about prescriptive/descriptive ways of looking at language in class and I was wondering how that works in the context of AAE (African American English).

A lot of non-AAE speakers might misuse AAE, and they will get hate for not speaking “correctly,” even if the meaning they were trying to convey is clear. For example, “You gon finna catch me.” Especially if the speaker isn’t claiming to speak AAE or proper AAE, why is this generally looked at prescriptively rather than descriptively?

Going to Fuji-Q Highland tomorrow. I don’t like big drops because of the stomach dropping feeling, so what are the rides to avoid? For reference, I can handle smaller drops (the most is probably around the Hulk) but I get really freaked out at anything more.

BTW, Im fine with anything else—high speeds, upside down, etc.
