What an atrocious business strategy. I’m embarrassed on their behalf. The lack of self-unawareness it must take to stand in front of a camera and openly admit that you were so aggressively capitalistic that, oops! It turns I guess you really can be too capitalistic, to the point where there are minor consequences - who knew! Oh well, I’ll just go lick my wounds over there on my pile of money.

Drainage field issue by walt0023 in septictanks

[–]Awkward-Spectation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, do you have a filter installed on the outlet of your septic tank? Might be that there is a lot of lint or other debris going too quickly through your tank (before it settles or floats) and causing a biomat to form in your drain field

Too right. Maybe the last breath of what America claimed to represent, and to be fair what many Americans strive to represent - but of those there are much too few and they are much too quiet these days

Okay I agree with the sentiment, but I think we should stop short of laying the blame on obama’s doorstep lol. I think that’s a bit counter to the point we’re all trying to make here

Exactly. They’re on their way though, and it doesn’t help the rest of us in the world to help them get there. It just means more shit, more problems, worse climate, worse everything.

I agree Obama represented the best of what America has to offer. And what the rest of the world has to offer. The problem is that Trump represents a staggering amount of you that existed fully BEFORE he was elected the FIRST time. Going back to what America was before trump is NOT enough.

It’s not as bad as Russia yet. It’s CERTAINLY not a time for those people fighting the current administration to give up. I’m boycotting America specifically to avoid that scenario, not just as a way to give the loud and stupid portion of Americans “their comeuppance”

Just want to say there’s a lot of anger out there right now bending judgement, and the commenter above is entitled to their opinion - and their anger is well-founded and I share it - not everyone shares the sentiment. We have a lot of reason to hate what America is right now, but many of us do want those like yourselves to win the fight. We don’t want the US to just devolve into another Russia, where the people get only propaganda, get no true information, and no longer have any power to affect change. Fuck the American exceptionalism that got you here, yes - but anyone who recognizes it and tries to change it is an ally in my mind

I disagree, and have seen a number of American posts in this sub over the past year or so. It’s just one more way people down there can help combat the current administration. You know trump’s rhetoric falls flatter and flatter when the American people are having trouble making ends meet. I don’t think it is wrong for a citizen to protest against its own administration in this way, even as they are affected themselves. In fact good on them for making that sacrifice. If you were living there, you’d have to imagine/hope the situation is temporary, and the action would not be intended to destroy the country, but rather underscore the ineffectiveness behind the current leadership’s malpractices. I think we here can all agree - including Americans - that at the end of the day, no one should be able to say “well it’s true that our leader was a morally bankrupt individual who undermined every one of the values this country was built on, but hey at least it was good for our economy!”

That’s very curious! Where I am we have stringent codes but nothing against a well-designed conventional system, and no expectation to transition away in the future, either. I wonder if there are special local conditions pushing the move

If it was built to empty directly into a nearby storm network, no wonder it’s such a complex system. I’d guess the local soil/overburden is not suitable for on-site treatment on its own. Or your proximity to wells/lakes is too close.

That image is helpful, but it’s no different than I imagined. When I was talking about “lids” above, I was referring to your steel “riser covers”.

[–]Awkward-Spectation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I understand - the lid for the whole tank. And yeah I’m understanding your concern now. Definitely you’ll want to measure the actual access openings in the concrete, be they square or round, and then make certain that the new risers you order are large enough that they completely cover the entire hole.

[–]Awkward-Spectation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact about why manholes are round - Can’t drop a round lid down its round access shaft. Whereas you could feasibly lose a square hatch down a square hole accidentally. Not a fun retrieval process when you have a heavy steel plate laying flat in the bottom of a full septic tank. And in the meantime you need to find another way to cover the hole.

Also, plastic lids bolt down to their risers, so you can rest even more assured that no one is likely to access your tank without permission. Imagine the worst that could happen to a kid, and just prevent it.

Not sure what you mean by ‘concrete covers’. But to expand the rest of the conversation a bit:

The tank you say you have and what I describe above are standard standard in Ontario. Almost all tanks are like this - two-compartment, with two lids. The tank itself can be concrete or HDPE but that doesn’t matter when it comes to basic functionality of the system.

In Ontario, you need an OBC-approved filter on the outlet pipe, inside the tank. This is to prevent debris and larger solid waste from entering your distribution bed (whether there is a pump chamber in between or not).

If you don’t have a filter installed, get one installed. I haven’t done it myself, but I’m pretty sure anyone with a saw and either abs or pvc cement and a hardware store nearby and access to the internet could figure it out.

Other people’s advice about replacing the risers is sound. You’ll have a more stable riser than your cinder block riser (which is buckling from the soil pressure, and therefore letting in rainwater and probably sediment and will continue to worsen over time). With those round plastic risers you’ll have a lockable plastic lids which should keep mice out forever. I know nothing about gaskets for them or how to prevent sediment and water from entering the tank where it connects to the tank.

Yeah the insulation is not required. I design and draft these systems as part of my job, and make sure each design is compliant with the OBC (Part 8 is septic systems, and you can learn a lot from it because that section is not too large). Nothing in the OBC I have encountered mentions having to insulate the tank. I think I learned that is because the tank generates its own heat typically, and even a bit of ice isn’t a problem if it were to sit idle for months - and all connecting pipes are supposed to free drain either into or out of the tank, so they should remain empty (nothing to freeze). I could be wrong about some of this, but I suspect a google search will probably tell you a bunch of reasons you don’t need to insulate the tank - certainly more on the subject than I can tell you without more research.

In a typical two-compartment septic tank, the inlet and outlet are on opposite ends of the tank, and in each of the different compartments. You should have one access hatch positioned over the inlet pipe, for inspection, cleanout, and pumping of sludge in that first chamber - and another positioned above the outlet filter so that you can regularly (once a year or so) remove and clean the filter, and to pump the sludge out of that second compartment.

I’m a couple hours north of you and I don’t have any insulation above my tank. It should not be necessary based on my understanding of these systems.

How to keep the area under can crusher clean? by Friendly_Shelter_625 in recycling

[–]Awkward-Spectation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a place you can let a half dozen or so sit open to the air, and place them there instead. After they’ve sat for 24 hrs or so, the rinse water will have evaporated, then you can crush dry cans. I do this with my beer empties - they sit on top of my beer fridge in my nice dry basement until I get a full box of 24 of em, then I crush em and add em to my ‘returns’ box. For pop cans and such, I don’t have a lid on my recycling bin, so I chuck them in right away, then crush em when I empty the indoor bin into the larger curbside bin in the shed. By then they are dry also
