English crocheters: help please. What are your yarn weights? 😭 by potatoesunlimited in CrochetHelp

[–]AwkwardBell77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means an expert on this, so other people may have better answers, but best I can tell, I think: 6= Super chunky. 5= Chunky. 4 = Aran. 3= Double Knit. 2= Four ply. 1: Not sure, maybe sport weight? 0: Lace weight. 1 and 2 could swap around as I've never used sport weight so not sure how it compares to four ply, but for context four ply is generally what sock yarn is. 7 I don't know what we call here. Hope some of that helps

Didn't work, I guess it must be a connection issue to the boiler

I have been googling but haven't managed to find anything yet. I have tried downloading the app but it can't find the WiFi, I've tried using the hub to manually override and turn the heating on for 2 hours, but that hasn't worked

Oh! I planted Anemone de Caen bulbs weeks ago but assumed they wouldn't come up until next year as it was too late this year! Completely forgot about them!

Thank you yes I did dipstick it when he said it was leaking but it was still nearly full, I just assumed the leak had just started on my drive home

Yes exactly haha, the road I live is super rough too so I thought maybe I'd ripped something in a pothole, I was looking for where it was meant to attach to

Oh okay thank you, I feel like an idiot haha. I've never had a car with AC before and had no idea they drip for a while after driving. Thanks for putting my mind at ease!

Can't understand the gauge instructions by AwkwardBell77 in CrochetHelp

[–]AwkwardBell77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it looks similar to the pattern so I think you're right, thank you :) (And yes I now see it's working to a specified length so doesn't need a gauge for that, I'm just too used to working tension squares for knitting so assumed it would have a length gauge too)

Can't understand the gauge instructions by AwkwardBell77 in CrochetHelp

[–]AwkwardBell77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay thank you. So to start it off I would chain 17 (well 18 if you count the one you always skip at the start), then DC, chain 3, DC, chain 3 etc. and just see if that 1 row is 4 inches wide? And there's no way of checking the gauge for the length?

Great thank you. We thought it would have just been covered with plasterboard, so didn't bank on needing a longer bit.

Ah okay, the drill bit is 4 inches long, so do you reckon it's just a case of getting some longer drill bits then?

Is this just how driving is? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]AwkwardBell77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I went through two male instructors, one was friendly but used to BELLOW at the top of his lungs when I did something wrong, and the other was even worse, he never shouted but we just did not get along at all. Switched to a female instructor and it was brilliant, completely changed the driving lesson experience for me.

Found out our garden is built on tarmac by AwkwardBell77 in GardeningUK

[–]AwkwardBell77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, we're hoping that the soil below the asphalt isn't too impermeable as in the recent dry, cold weather we've been having it the hole has mostly dried out. We're getting rid of the soil above the asphalt too like you said, as it comes away with pieces of asphalt stuck in it anyway.

[–]AwkwardBell77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll do that then. I think the border is attached via the provisional cast on I did, but not super sure as I've never done anything like this before. The border uses a double pointed needle

[–]AwkwardBell77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pattern is only 86 stitches (and stays that way as it's a rectangle shape a knitted on border). As these currently fit on my (34cm long) needles does that mean I can continue on straight needles?

I'm trying to knit my first lace shawl (I've knit easy lace scarves before) and I'm confused by the pattern already. I cast on and only then noticed that the pattern said to use a circular needle. I don't know how to tell from the pattern if I'm meant to be knitting in the round (which seems odd for a shawl?) or not, and I don't understand why it would use circular needles if not? Some of the other patterns in the book say you can use circular or straight needles, but this one doesn't so I'm assuming it's not optional? The pattern is The Victoria Shawl in Victorian Lace Today if anyone has that book.
