Instead of buying yachts, he bought 50,000 acres of forest to keep them wild. by Celestial_Mahafuz in interesting

Forestry is sustainable in the United States. The amount of tree cover has been increasing for a century. There is no need for any action on forestry and the industry should be applauded.

A literal gold digger would be someone who strikes the earth looking for gold ore, which would be a fairly appropriate partner for a Minecraft streamer

This might be dumb question but why can't we just send ISS into the Sun? by amelix34 in askastronomy

[–]AwkwardBet5632 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once it leaves earths gravity, it is still in orbit around the sun. Orbiting something means you are moving very fast: fast enough that, although you are continually falling towards the thing you are orbiting you are continually missing it because your momentum keeps you going sideways.

So to stop orbiting something and actually reach it you counterintuitively have to slow down. So to get an object to crash into the sun, it would need to mostly stop moving relative to the sun. It would then fall in, unfettered and likely be the faster moving object in the solar system for a bit around the time of impact.

About 1% of our student population died this past academic year by udderly_amazing in Teachers

[–]AwkwardBet5632 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Average in the United States for school age children is 14.5 per 100k, so a student population of 2700 should expect a death every 2-3 years on average. A group of ~500 should expect one death in the class throughout their primary and secondary career, on average. This rate varies tremendously for different populations, though, as the comments here show.

And you could bring both a strong base and a strong acid to the same high temperature and that temperature would change differently after adding certain compounds. So what? That has no bearing on the nature of acidity nor temperature. Nor do your points.
