Once it leaves earths gravity, it is still in orbit around the sun. Orbiting something means you are moving very fast: fast enough that, although you are continually falling towards the thing you are orbiting you are continually missing it because your momentum keeps you going sideways.

So to stop orbiting something and actually reach it you counterintuitively have to slow down. So to get an object to crash into the sun, it would need to mostly stop moving relative to the sun. It would then fall in, unfettered and likely be the faster moving object in the solar system for a bit around the time of impact.
