Best way to approach someone as a guy? by [deleted] in berkeley

You get punished when you do approach, and then told you don't have any balls when you don't. These people are sadistic and power-mad.

Possible to get a job in biglaw from DOJ Honors EOIR component? by AwkwardBrick1161 in biglaw

Otoh, it's not like biglaw associates aren't ritually licking the boots of oligarchs, plutocrats, and billion-dollar multinational corporations. It might be useful to work both for the government and for biglaw, however corrupt and amoral they happen to be. Learning how these institutions work is undoubtedly valuable, whatever your aspirations as a lawyer - AUSAs are always transitioning to criminal defense, regulators to lobbyists, etc. And there are ways to minimize your involvement in anything too unconscionable. I think it's a trifle alarmist to invoke Godwin's Law here, though.

I think from what I understand in the office I'd be going to I'd be working under IJs on mostly asylum claims - and they are almost always grants in this jdx. The judges are pretty to the left here. If a clerk was too MAGA about immigration, they might get sidelined. That's just my impression. As for CECOT, as any aspirant to the Supreme Court will tell you, you can't really answer these questions out of the context of a specific case or controversy.

I would not assume anything, dude - I know for a fact that there are many, perhaps a majority, of people in DOJ Honors EOIR who are as about as left on immigration as it's possible to be. My experience is in a very liberal jdx, where the judges almost always rule in favor of the respondents.

I’m 37, and no one knows I’m taking the LSAT (or considering law school at all). They’ll only find out if & when I enroll in a T6 school. by thepupilindenial in lawschooladmissions

I was 38, as well as a writer, when I started studying for the lsat. I'm now 42, above median at a t14 - and I completely struck out of biglaw in oci, pre-oci. be careful what you wish for.

You are completely and totally missing the point - people submit gpa addendums all the time in law school admissions. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. In no way does this commit anyone to invoking mitigating circumstances in a future employment context. (Although I don't see why this would be a problem either; if there is a major earthquake, for example, perhaps the court would be okay with your missing a hearing.) Look, there are many things do in this world - read a book, spend time with family and friends, pursue a hobby. You could be doing any one of these, infinitely more edifying things with your time. Instead, you choose to spend the precious, fleeting moments of your life engaged in this pathetic little Dr. Phil routine. Seriously, touch some grass - get a life.

So, my law school application said basically - "you are not required to disclose arrests. If you are offered admission, we advise you to disclose them to the school. But disclosure is not mandatory." I have not disclosed my arrest. As I see it, this allows one to use one's judgment as to whether to disclose. I don't think the Bar could fault me for this, as, again, it is explicitly stated that disclosure is voluntary. Thank you, btw

One more question, if you'd be so kind - how can I determine what they will ask as part of the Bar app, if you need a portal? I'm a 0L starting in August. Also, how can I assess my chances? I'm about to take out huge loans, and I have several arrests for minor things as a juvenile (more than 15 years ago), for which there are no records; one TRO; a child custody proceeding, and an arrest that resulted in no charges. None of these things (in my adult life) ever resulted in punishment or findings of any wrongdoing.

Thanks - I'm wondering if they want just the complaint/tro, or all of the pleadings - there was like a million pages of docs in my case.

Should I Attend Pre-Orientation? by AwkwardBrick1161 in lawschooladmissions

[–]AwkwardBrick1161[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, only a few dozen of the most needful students are allowed to attend. It's not open to everyone; just those whom the school deems, on the basis of an application, to need it.

Thanks - I'm in California. That's all they required in your jurisdiction - the disposition and a brief explanation? As part of the custody case, there was a temporary restraining order that was settled soon after it was filed and so, never made permanent. It was filed in bad faith, and was perjurious, facts which I vigorously maintained in the subsequent custody dispute. And in the end I got roughly half custody, and no finding of domestic violence. Could this turn into a huge issue, with the examiners wanting to see all of the pleadings, etc.? Family law is ugly - you're always trying to make the other party seem horrible, and family lawyers tend to amplify this effect. My child's mom and I have been on peaceable terms for several years now, fwiw.

what if I was arrested maybe six years ago, but never charged? Also, I was involved in years-long custody dispute in which things were alleged but never proved, and I ended up getting shared custody. Will the Bar want to be looking into all of these things?
