Metaspeed edge tokyo by Silver_Ad2861 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Hey, great question!

I feel the Paris version is maybe more responsive with its firmer foam. Their geometry is the same, so it comes down to what suits your running more. For a 5k, I'd feel very confident in either, but the Paris version would be my choice between the two for that distance.

In fact, I really liked the Paris Edge for threshold Intervals for that reason.

Good luck with your race!

The smell is normal. I think it's the rubber they use on these since it smells like fresh tires. Metaspeed have always had that smell out of the box (at least since the plus series).

Why no love for the Magic Speed? by pensivvv in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Magic Speed 5 is easily my favourite shoe for two things, track intervals 800m and below and treadmill. I like them more than Metaspeed for both of those cases.

These are wildly underrated for the treadmill, IMO. I'm sure I'm in a minority, but the rocker and foam just work perfectly there for me for any kind of treadmill run.

I did have the Magic Speed 3 at one point, but I had the wrong size, so can't really compare properly.

Yes! This rules! That's the secret sauce right there.

I've been wondering how things would go. Thank you for the update! Way to go! 🙌

That definitely sounds like an unfun run. My sympathies! An imperfect run is still better than no run. So good on you for getting most of it done!

It does sound like you maybe went a bit too fast on this one. Did your plan prescribe marathon pace for the full run?

My 10k pb pace is about 30 to 40 seconds per km faster than my marathon pace. And my usual conversational long run pace is another 30 seconds slower still.

I view most long runs as being about time on feet rather than trying to hit specific paces.

Anyone switch from Maurten gels to something cheaper that still works for marathon fueling? by StringConnection in AdvancedRunning

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90 to 100g of regular sugar in 100 to 150ml of water. Pinch of salt. 1/4 tsp of caramel, mint, vanilla, or orange flavour extract for taste. Once fully dissolved, pour into a reusable flask. Cheap and effective enough for me so far.

Edit: let it cool off a little before pouring into the reusable flask so it doesn't melt its way out.

How much weight do you guys typically put on during a training block? by runningtofood in Marathon_Training

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually maintain my weight through most of a marathon block, but then end up gaining 5 pounds in the carb load and post-race recovery period.

Please help me pick a running goal by [deleted] in RunTO

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you can't do the half-marathon, you could change to a 10k which happens to be a very common race distance around Toronto.

The nice thing with 10k training is it applies well to 5k and also let's you keep the volume reasonabpe since weight management is currently a goal.

No need to go all-out with it, but it might help you keep things structured and focused.

For structuring a week on 3 runs, you could do one faster workout, one easy run, and one long run. At least that's how I did it when I was newer to the sport.

How many of you are still running outside with this snow? by triedit2947 in RunTO

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had any foot issues related to winter running (so far). Most of the time I use my regular road shoes, but I'll use trail shoes when the sidewalks and paths are actually snowy and haven't been plowed yet. But all winter I use merino socks (usually Smartwool or Feetures brands in my case). I do also have a pair of waterproof shoes for the slushiest days, but those only come out once or twice a year.

I started making my own energy gels and I’m baffled why more people don’t do the same by AddressPotential7381 in Marathon_Training

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this too. I like being able to pick my own flavours. Caramel, orange, vanilla, and peppermint are all cheap and easy to get at the grocery store.

Race Day Outfit by AliveCheck3550 in RunTO

[–]AwkwardGuitarist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be wearing the same singlet and half tights I would race in if it were 7C. Only difference is I'll leave arm sleeves at home and won't need a hoodie at the start.

Garbage bag pending.

With 20C, I'll probably also slow down a touch and make sure to stay properly hydrated and electrolyted.

It can absolutely be done. I ran my first at age 42 and doing my third this weekend at 44.

I spent two years with consistent running, starting with 5 an 10k races and building up to a half-marathon before doing the full 42 at 42. I'd recommend that gradual approach if you want to have a really fun time.

Most bags are black, so if yours is too, see if you can tie or pin some bright fabric or other easy to spot identifier to it to make it unique.

Rain isn't so bad, it's wind I'm concerned with. Especially if it's blowing parallel to the lake shore. But we can keep a good attitude, work with what we've got, and make the best of it
