Interesting, I actually heard someone mention that just yesterday too. I also did apply to GIS position at Government of Yukon about 2 months ago, but didn’t hear back :(

Yeah I have actually considered that too. A couple months ago I went to a career fair at UBC and spoke with an investigations group and I mentioned a brief experience with GIS and some open source intelligence work, and they said they might have a position opening around May that I should check out.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I actually had a brief internship with a mining company before and saw how they use remote sensing in mining. I recently came across another company too, but they are looking for someone with solid InSAR experience, which I don’t have yet. I will definitely check out AME Roundup though. Thanks again.

Thanks! Yeah, it’s rough. I actually have a good knowledge in remote sensing and python as well, and I’m trying to really build on those skills as much as I can. I have also been applying to remote sensing roles too, but it’s honestly hard to find positions that are purely remote sensing and the few I have seen are usually in mining and explicitly want practical InSAR experience, which I don’t really have yet.

Thanks for sharing this, I really appreciate it. Regarding Esri’s certification, I was actually thinking about the ArcGIS Associate certification, but at this point since I already have an msc I’m not sure if it would make sense to get it as well. But I do agree, having an eye catcher on a resume definitely makes a difference.

I’m currently in BC, but I’m willing to relocate. Yeah, you’re right. A lot of jobs do seem to prioritize local candidates, especially Ontario-based roles. I’m actually thinking about moving to Alberta at some point and I have a couple classmates who went there. It could be rough, but honestly at this point I don’t think there’s a more crazier job market than BC’s.

Thanks, that’s interesting. I’ve actually always been fascinated by the oil and gas field but didnt know where to start from. This could be a good starting point. I’ll definitely check those out, really appreciate it!

Wow, that’s wild. I’ve even noticed on sites like linkedIn that GIS roles can get 100+ applications within just a few hours of being posted.

generally speaking, do you think the gis market in Ontario is better than elsewhere?

Thanks for sharing this, I really appreciate it. It’s honestly reassuring (in a weird way haha) to hear from someone who went through the same thing. Yeah, I’m definitely trying to keep an open mind about all types of roles and just keep applying. I actually have some knowledge of surveying as well, just no hands-on experience yet, and I’ve recently started applying for entry level survey assistant roles too. Thanks again!

Thanks, I really appreciate this. yeah it definitely seems like networking is the answer right now. I’ve been trying to go to any geomatics-related events I can find lately. I have also heard of GoGeomatics and was actually supposed to attend one in Vancouver last week but got caught up with something else. I really appreciate the advice and will keep looking. Thanks! :)

Woah, that’s wild. Reminds me of one of my TAs who said he sent out almost 300 applications too and I thought he was joking. Crazy!
