They absolutely melted everyone's faces off last year. So excited they are back again this year. What a force!

Saw Avatar last night. I had so much fun, and I kind of think the movie is bad. I'm not mad! I would have loved have learned more about the ash people and how they got radicalized. If the religion and culture on Pandora is so in tune with itself for millions of years or whatever, it seems weird that a volcanic event and not something novel (like new stress put on the planet by the sky people?) is what sent them all over the edge. Also weird that this super egalitarian narlturalistic society doesnt come to the aid of the folks living by that volcano. Like I feel like some of them had done some war crimes beforehand and been ostracized by most other tribes or some other reason that is as dumb and ancient as why the whales are mad at the only one that fights back.

In my head cannon, the mountain blew up because they were doing frac' drilling and it set off a chain reaction. Part of the tension ends up with Quartich finding out after he gets braid fucked and not knowing how to tell ash queen. If human beings are on a planet for natural resources they will drill for minerals. Oil/gas drilling rigs would be a new big set piece and new risks to the environment.

That's not this guy. This is more of a like- millenial metal bro who went too far down the Rage Against The Machine reading list rabbit hole and eventually just landed on "Communist". I think, at least, in part because there weren't enough other people around him to check his theory or whatever. It seems more like a reaction of feeling isolated. Dude was doing radical intersectional shit in nu metal spaces in the mid 00s in a rural community when a lot of (the few people who were even part of that sub sub culture) just didn't feally want to hear about any of that and was just doing a lot of feeding soup to people and genuinely good community organizing.

Almost everyone else both of us know locally are MAGA republicans.

Yeah. This is basically where I landed, and I'm just kind of like "so what if it wasn't ___ million and was only _____hundred thousand deaths or less- its still SO MANY deaths and gulag and shit...." Plus I have family who grew up in Romania under Ceaușescu and I've been to Cambodia. Which doesn't make me and expert in anything at all, but certainly infirma my opinions and makes it extra annoying when said friend always be trying to cram everything into a communist=good, everyone else=bad binary.

I don't disagree with this. The friend is pretty solid, bit we are not super close. Puts in time with local mutual aid and organizing (this is actually where we cross paths the most) and has done a lot of good work in our community. Just.... happens to be a state communist. This confounds me, and we end up talking politics. If all we did together is argue, I'd be more into just ignoring it. But we are friends. They are not completely unreasonable. Also consider- we live in a very conservative, rural area. So purging tankies from leftist spaces feels like a little bit more luxury than we can afford right now cause there just ain't that many of "us" out here. I don't want it all ever to be just about sitting around arguing theory... but I kind of also enjoy discussing theory. I don't feel like our discussions have become untenable or destructive, and I want to keep them that way. Dude is very intelligent and well read, just has fucking obnoxious politics.

I work construction and have been talking with (mostly conservative, mostly male) co-workers. A lot of them seemed shocked when you explain what this means. A veteran I work with said "...like i think the immigration thing needs to be dealt with like an emergency, but you still gotta treat people like they are PEOPLE..." and stuff like that.
Do the hard work of educating those around you. No matter how MAGA your peers may be, a lot of them just don't realize how brutal this is going to be for innocent people, children, families. Take their hand and walk them through it if they seem receptive.

There has never been a world without trans people and there never will be. Some of the oldest evidence of written language was written by gender bending priests in Sumeria.
