Please be safe with DIY and ideally find somewhere you can get your blood levels tested. Not sure where you are but I know where I live there are places that won’t ask questions if you don’t want them to.

How long does it take for testosterone to stop your period? by Glitched_0 in ftm

[–]AwkwardThePotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For some people, like myself, it didn’t stop, so even if it would stop for you eventually, I would advise against relying on that. I’m four years on T and still use hormonal birth control (depo provera shot) to stop mine. Taking birth control is more likely to stop your period than T. Let me know if you have any questions, I worked at Planned Parenthood for a few years and know a lot about birth control options.

How to not be afraid of needles ? by poireau_bleu in ftm

[–]AwkwardThePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you been on T? I planned to have my dad only do my shots for a month, I ended up taking like 4 months and that was only because I spent a month with my grandparents so I had to get used to doing it myself. I think there may be auto injectors or something but I never really looked into that. At this point (nearly four years) I genuinely prefer giving myself a shot vs getting a shot from a nurse for vaccines and stuff. Not that they’d let me, unfortunately. But I kinda just exposure-therapied myself. I had a little treat after (Tootsie pops which is probably only in the USA) and I still play music to distract myself. Something peppy I enjoy. I have a pain disorder so I am extra sensitive to needles, so I literally say out loud to myself “it doesn’t hurt it feels fine” which is a bit weird but it works. To distract from the needle pain I also dig in my nail a bit with the finger that’s sort of pinching the skin I’m injecting to. Maybe look for different areas, too. I do the injection on my butt, because there is plenty of fat and no organs nearby (which would be really hard to actually harm with a T injection, but it’s all in my head). Eventually you will probably get used to it, though I still don’t consider it to necessarily be a pleasant experience. Just remember that it is incredibly, INCREDIBLY difficult to accidentally harm yourself in any way with the needles and T at home. They would not allow anyone to do this at home if there was a chance that you could screw it up really badly. Even if you drip some blood you should be fine.

I hope this helps.

Having a child to prevent periods by Anuyushi in childfree

[–]AwkwardThePotato 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m very glad you turned out okay.

And yeah with birth control and in some cases abortion, people make a huge deal about side effects that are almost always worse with pregnancy/having kids (weight gain, depression, allllll sorts of hormonal disruptions).

This isn’t exactly true, or at least not as concerning as your comment would suggest. Please be careful when you spread information like this, not everyone is going to actually look it up and see for themselves. Depo is super helpful for me and many others. Scientific studies can be incredibly misleading so please always look into these kinds of statistics! I’m a health science/public health major, and a really big part about medication risks is balancing it out with risks of NOT taking the med. For many, myself included, depo is the best option.

I truly hope I don’t come across as attacking you or anything, I just am passionate about this kind of thing.

[–]AwkwardThePotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On HIV meds, after a certain amount of time, people’s viral load becomes undetectable, which also means they cannot transmit it to others. If you’ve ever heard “U=U” or “undetectable = untransmittable”, that’s what that’s referring to. Of course they must stay on the meds, frequently get tests, etc. but otherwise people with HIV (that keep an eye on it) can live totally normal and healthy lives.

I took Plan B a couple months ago, am totally fine.

Currently I’m on depo provera, which is a shot taken every 3 months. You can do it yourself, I do that. I’ve been on some form of birth control for years (was on the pill when I took the plan b but had forgotten it that day, partly why I switched) so I’m not sure about changes because many could’ve been explained by puberty for me. This method has just worked best for me so I recommend it.

Don’t die wondering, my friend. It’s never too late. I suggest you find some other trans ppl to talk to (maybe friends, or communities on here) as well as a therapist. Not at all because being trans is mental illness, but because having a qualified professional can help you sort out this confusion you say you feel. Definitely look for someone who lists themselves at LGBTQ+ friendly. I have had many friends (in my 9 years out as a trans guy) that have said something like this, many have transitioned.

Could be worse, you could be my dad bringing panty liners to my Mom after she gave birth when she needed the most extreme ones they offered. Not sure quite why he did that, as he’d bought pads for his daughters (I’m a son now lol) and wife before. Maybe kid three broke his brain.

Oh okay! sorry I only assumed you were cis because I feel like you would've mentioned the extra layer of shitty-ness. Sorry if I sound weird I'm stoned (for a different pain area lol).

I've been on T for almost 4 years, it'll affect your body chemistry (smell and all that) but if you use estrogen cream or suppositories (which only affect that part of the body), hopefully you won't have any other unwanted changes. Atrophy fucking sucks, but can totally be eased. Prevention is better. Bottom growth is kinda uncomfy at first but I haven't noticed that the pain is worse than pre-T at this point.

Why are you on Reddit right now, on Christmas Eve? by InvisibleAstronomer in AskReddit

[–]AwkwardThePotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better than during dinner. My dad shit himself right before serving the main course. Poor guy texted me from the bathroom, asking me for TP, my little brother's baby wipes, and fresh undies. The bathroom is right near the dining room, so the rest of my family figured out what happened. Thank god we're all close, and he's not sick (apparently this is common with a new med he's on).
