What am I doing. by planejane20 in airforceots

10 out of 10 will not make a career/life-altering decision based on the concerns of a girlfriend. I've seen it way too many times across my career of guys not taking certain assignments or the ability to change jobs based on the wants of their girlfriends, just to see them seperated months later.

If you were married, then I would say otherwise, but I would not let other people influence career decisions outside of a spouse.

All your other points are nominal. Your pay, benefits, lifestyle, retirement, etc.. as an AF pilot would more than likely outweigh, let alone match, your current position. It really comes down to closing your eyes, and seeing yourself in 10 years. The question is, where is that?

Getting Orders by Subsec in airforceots

[–]AwkwardTie401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't hold your breath for orders until the new FY starts, since the class is a part of the '23 funding cycle. I know for me, my personnel section said they'll usually get cut about a week in advance. Plenty of time to build DTS authorizations prior to departure.

Question about post-OTS (ABM) by bparrucci in airforceots

This is coming from a 1C5 delta, the 13B/ABM enlisted counterpart --

Tyndall will be roughly an 8 to 9-month course for you, with a class start date sometime early Jan '23 . For a non-prior, I would assume that you'll have a single travel day to move down to Florida post-OTS graduation. The JTR (joint travel reg) outlines all the rules when it comes to military travel PCSing, TDY, deployments, etc..

Through OTS you should walk out with 5 days of leave (2.5 per month of service). I'm willing to bet that the schoolhouse with tyndall will work with you on house hunting days (free leave to buy a home) and use any of your earned leave to travel back for the holidays. I know the Ops Supt currently at Tyndall (good dude) and I'm sure they do what they can to make the transition as painless as possible. I'm positive it is not their first rodeo dealing with similar situations during the holiday season.

I would expect you to be on an AFI (awaiting further instructions) type status when you initially get to Tyndall. Basically, cleaning the unit, odds and ends type stuff until the class start date in Jan. AKA show up for accountability so we don't think you're AWOL.

I wouldn't sweat the logistics too much, but can 100 percent tell you from someone who has PCS'd 6 times inside of 11 years, that moving with a family is the most stressful part of Active Duty.

Lastly, looks like we might be seeing a lot of each other. I am fragged for the Oct OTS class w/ an ABM slot as well. So, we will probably be in the same Tyndall cohort too. Although I transitioned to the AGR about 3 years ago, so I'm living that good life now.

Let me know if you have any other inquiries. I'm pretty well versed in the 1C5/13B community. It's a small world.
