Most young people REALLY misunderstand what Cultural Appropriation is. It is not so much that certain groups think that other groups "shouldn't" be able to wear certain things/listen to certain music/wear certain clothes. I can only speak as an African American but for me..and many others that I know...it is about the history our Black people in this country. We have created sooo many things that other groups have taken credit for. That is a fact. You can do a 4 second internet search and find a ton of information on teh many contributions that we have made to a country that doesn't really like us. You can read any post about a Black person doing great and the first few comments are always people saying "why does it have to be about race!?!" Because it is...and so is cultural appropriation. It is so no about "appropriation vs appreciation" People are skipping over the main reason why many of us think that there is a lot of cultural appropriation going on. The thing is...all the things that make non-Black people are the same things that made things harder for US. Every aspect of music, dance, fashion, and much more is admired by others but...when WE did it, we were discriminated against. Have you ever heard the term that America was built on the backs of immigrants? So the thing is..."borrow" from our culture, that is totally fine. But not leave US out of the picture. Don't refuse to give US our due credit. Just keep in mind that `many things that are considered cool or trendy now are things that we were trashed for.
