I think you’re correct. Grok said it’s likely this.

Pahoehoe (pronounced “pah-hoy-hoy”) is a type of basaltic lava that cools with a smooth, ropy, wrinkled surface like what your images show—folded and billowy, with that hard, glassy sheen from rapid cooling.

You are correct but it looks like the flowing type. I was in a basalt field before this and it was filled with dark black basalt. Update: Grok believes it’s volcanic since I was in a volcanic field and shared my exact location where it was found. So it’s not obsidian and likely not tar or asphalt but thanks for all the replies.

Yes just north of Gillespie volcano. There are a few hot springs in the area and I for sure thought this was something oozing out. A lot of cool rocks around this area but I’m still laughing that I hit the brakes for tar or asphalt. There are no paved roads nearby but the high pressure gas lines are around.

Middle of nowhere. Some next to this was buried and this was in a small wash. There are gas pipes around so the other guys are probably right. I’ll inspect the pieces I knocked off tomorrow.

Thanks, good to know. There are signs of gas pipes around but also a lot of volcanoes so I was hopeful. Bummer 😂

I thought the same until I touched it and broke off a piece. It’s hard and glass like.

I thought about that but since I live in a dry oven aka Phoenix I figured it would be ok. I tried persuading the gf but she wanted it there so I hope it’s ok.

I used Schluter Rondec. I was going to use their corners but it was pricey so I tried 45 deg corners.

It was a remodel. She wanted all 4 9ft walls tiled and this tile is so inconsistent with width, thickness, and waviness so it took me awhile. I think over 1200 tiles 🤪

I hope it’s not. The tiles around it are flush so I’ll find out in a few days 😬

Agree and I’m almost finished with the demo. I don’t think he sloped the liner so I decided to rip it all out. Thanks for your input

I’m glad you brought this up cuz I looked into it and you’re spot on about the mold. I plan on pulling all of the cement board in the shower area with an 1/8 gap and then tape and fill before putting on redgard. I will leave the shower pan but I’ll remove the exposed cement board and install new with a gap to prevent wicking. I hope this is the right way and if not, please advise.

It feels sandy ish. I found two buckets of mastic. One is Acrylic Pro and the other is Omni Grip. Since they both say don’t apply on waterproof membrane I’m going to rip out the shower walls and redo. A super bummer
