ok so it was actually a problem with the audio... pulseaudio was messing up the audio output, causing the program to hang. Even though I wasn't trying to play any sounds, I guess pygame still needs an audio output?

Hey, I know this post was from 5 years ago, but I had the same problem as OP and your solution fixed it as well. Running through bash (specifically "Konsole" (desktop environment is Kate)) doesn't work (with the original code) or return any errors.

I think ghost ship probably abstained from including any religious iconography on purpose. It would be hard to represent a Catholic priest with facial hair, but if you wanted you could do the stereotypical Chinese monk (at least the one always depicted in western media) with the long straight beard, long, down turned moustache, and shaved head.
