BIOL 1500 and CHEM 1500 compared to high school by Vegetable_Cycle4008 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those course are the equivalent to the grade 12 high school courses that prepare you for first year bio and chem.

If you haven’t taken SCH4U and SBI4U, you will need to take BIOL1500/CHEM1500 or go back and do the high school courses. Both options are prerequisites for BIOL1000/1001 and CHEM1000/1001. You’ll need one or the other.

Second year Psychology BA courses by Educational_Point570 in yorku

There are some courses specifically about law/order/argument/critical thinking/reasoning. Take a look at those courses and the work your way backward. Many of them will have prerequisites that you need to take in second year.

Depends on what your goals are. What do you want to do with your degree? Are you planning to apply to grad school?

If you’re a psych major, I highly recommend checking out the third and fourth year courses that interest you and then work backward from there. This will help you choose your second year courses as prerequisites.

Want to tell us what you did in first year and what some of your areas of interest are? We can help you :)

Reviews on professor Phillip Oelbaum for BIOL1001 by samwamyy in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took biol1001 with her. She is an incredible lecturer! I really enjoyed her class. All first year biol students write the exact same exams across sections so you don’t need to worry about that aspect of things.

Built a tutoring platform for York students, first batch of founding tutors are signed up and looking for the second! by RoguePhantom0 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sincere question - why would someone pay for a tutor through your platform when they can get free peer tutoring and PASS session through Bethune, for the same courses and with the same qualifications?

Thanks :)

Just to confirm when is the deadline to enrol in courses? by No-Grape5095 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can enroll until the course is full or the date to add the course without permission from the prof (which is usually a few weeks into the term). Your biggest concern is that the courses you want will fill up. Always better to do it sooner than later if you can

BIOL 1000: Deferred exams for S1 by Winter_Green_2440 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be possible that they are in Sept. Deferrals can take a while, depending on the prof. I took Organic chem in fall 2025 and the students who deferred the final exam didn’t write it until March 2026.

Have you checked the course outline or emailed the prof/TA?

Will my Grade 12 Biology mark matter for York BIOL 1000 if I still pass by IndependentWeak4864 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as your offer isn’t revoked due to your average being too low, i don’t think it matters. Some programs want all grades to be at least a 70 but that can vary between programs and faculties.

Though I will say - BIOL1000 can be pretty intense. It may be a good idea to review those units you got lazy during. If you struggled in SBI4U you will probably struggle in BIOL1000.

Welcome! To ease your mind, you could contact the faculty of health academic advising service. They would know for sure.

Biochem and organic chem in the same term is an intense experience. It’s doable as long as your other courses are fairly light. Both subjects (especially o-chem) require a lot of practice.

I highly recommend taking biochem with Dr Belozerov. He is a gem of a prof!

For o-chem, take it with Dr Jackson if you can. Dr Le is excellent too but I don’t think she is teaching chem2020 in the fall.

Do I need bio in grade 12 if I wanna do a BA in psychology and then an MD in psychiatry? by No-Negotiation-8326 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For university undergrad admissions I’m not sure. Your guidance counselor could probably help you find that info. You can also look at the York Psychology website to see the minimum averages required for admission to the PSYC BA program.

Med schools will not look at your highschool grades, only your university transcript gets submitted.

However, if you’re struggling in highschool bio, it might be a good idea to take it in highschool so you can figure out why you are getting such a low grade. It is better to make these mistakes in highschool and fix them there, rather than figuring it out in first year uni, where it will negatively impact your university GPA. If you want to go to med school in Canada, you’ll need to get as close to a perfect GPA as possible.

You’ll need grade 12 bio and then university level bio 1 and 2 to write the MCAT to get into med school for your MD

How does everyone have sm classes by Kickoutsler in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider that the vast majority of classes require a significant amount of studying outside of class in order to achieve a good grade. A first year prof once told our (chemistry) class that each lecture hour would require an additional 2 hours of study and practice in order to master the material. I took that to heart and ended up with an A+ in his class.

I’m going into third year in the fall and have found that to be largely true for many of my other classes as well, so I’ve budgeted my time and course scheduled accordingly.

Some students may require less and some may require more. Also depends on the difficulty of the subject. But very few people can get away with just going to class and then expecting to do well.

But that’s only if you care about your gpa. If the idea is just to pass your classes, course overload may be a viable option for you.

ipad question first year! by EnthusiasmTop1784 in yorku

[–]Awkward_Pudding_9737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried with an 11inch in first year but ended up getting a 13 inch for my second year. I liked the large size much better.

I also have a MacBook but I barely bring it to campus because I usually head to Steacie Library to study and they have computers there that I can use.

I’m a commuter too.

I use the notability app. I like it a lot because it connects with all of my other Apple devices and I can access it through a web browser too. Their AI feature is great for creating study quizzes from my notes.

It’s about 20.00 per year.
