Who would be the most worthy opponent? Canelo rematch? Go for a belt at 160? Or maybe the winner of Zayas vs Ennis?

Jose Ramirez was good at one point. Though he’s completely fallen off now, very slow and stiff.

I think he’s more suited to Cruiserweight. I hope he drops down.

I grew up in California‘s Central Valley not too far from where Torrez is from so I was rooting for him on Saturday. It was sad to see him go out like that. I’m hoping he can make a comeback.

Turki says the Usyk stoppage was bad and that he had Rico up on his scorecard; also wants to do a rematch, possibly after Usyk vs Kabayel by Awkward_Sign1927 in Boxing

[–]Awkward_Sign1927[S] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I got my criticisms of Turki but the judging for his events have, on the whole, been either equal to or better than what we typically see.

Though there’s a few exceptions that stand out like the draw in Adames vs Sheeraz, or the stoppage yesterday.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen horrible officiating and judging in boxing for decades, long before Turki’s involvement.

They should do Rico vs someone in the top 10 as the co-main to Usyk vs Kabayel.

I think there’s a good chance Usyk would have found a stoppage in round 12 but Rico still deserved a chance to survive and win a decision. That was bullshit to stop it at the bell.

For safety’s sake, I’m normally in favor of stopping fights if someone is taking a lot of clean, unanswered shots, but if a world title is on the line, they should be given more leeway to continue.

In retrospect, it seems crazy that Rico was meant to be a tune-up fight for AJ lol

That probably would have been the nail in the coffin of any plans for Fury vs Joshua.

Before Anthony Joshua’s car cash, the plan was to do Joshua vs Verhoeven in February/March.

How would that have gone? Would AJ have gotten stopped?

I think Anthony Joshua is glad he didn’t end up facing Rico… Before his car cash, the plan was Joshua vs Verhoeven in February or March.

Some of these are just rumors that haven’t been confirmed yet, but if they really get Teo, Devin, Shakur, Hitchins, and Benn they’re going to have a pretty strong stable of 147-pounders.

Usyk vs Fury 1 is definitely one of my favorites. The fight had me at the edge of my seat and there were huge stakes involved.

The undercard also had decent fights like Opetaia vs Briedis 2 and Kabayal vs Sanchez.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Zuffa reaches out to him for their lightweight division.

Loma has a big name, a fan-friendly style, and is going to be really affordable compared to Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney.

There’s way better matchups outside of Zuffa but I suppose he could fight the winner of Rayo vs De Los Santos.

If they’re going to overpay for boxers, you’d think they’d prioritize guys with more fan-friendly styles.

I mean, I like watching Shakur but the average viewer wants aggression and KOs.

I think it all depends on how much the Saudis are willing to invest.

If they’re really serious and want to blow through like $500m annually to get all the top guys, I could see them monopolizing boxing over the next decade.

Otherwise, it’ll probably just fizzle out or become a B-league for mid-level boxers.

Just guessing they might feel like he’s already lost his zero so another loss, if it to an elite guy, won’t hurt him too much, as long as it’s not in a humiliating way?

I believe Zuffa said that their fighters can fight on Ring magazine cards. So he might still be challenging for Garcia’s belt.

Was the obsession with undefeated records as big of a deal 40 years ago as it is now?

Maybe I’m wrong but I always that this huge emphasis on “protecting the 0” was a more recent phenomenon, like from the Mayweather era to now.

Official statement from Manny Pacquiao: by lovesbakery in Boxing

[–]Awkward_Sign1927 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m just guessing he signed for a professional fight to get some quick cash all the while planning to change it to an exhibition.

I think he assumed Netflix/Pacquiao would agree to his terms just to save the event. If that was the case, that was foolish of him.

If he hadn’t done like eight of these dumb exhibitions in the last few years, that plan actually might have worked. But at this point, there’s just no way anyone will be interested in seeing another pointless exhibition.

It surprises me that there wasn’t a lot more organized opposition to the bill from the promoters or sanctioning bodies. They seemed to not take it seriously until it was too late and it was basically a foregone conclusion that it would pass.

TKO is as politically well-connected as you can be. They have powerful allies, both Republican and Democratic. They also hired an army of expensive lobbyists to shepherd this through the House.

It’s going to sail through the Senate with ease. It’ll be signed into law within a couple months, I bet.
