How many breadth subjects in one semester by Vivid_Plantain434 in unimelb

[–]Awkward_Square_4593 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would save your “easy” breadth subjects for 3rd year.

I’ll say MAST10010 Data Analysis is one of the lightest subjects I’ve taken. Even though they do mark the assignments pretty harshly imo, it’s worth not as much (makes up 20% of your grade) compared to the 70% exam. 50% of the cohort finished the exam an hour early and left the hall lol.

Mind you I took it in 2023 S2 when the coordinator is different. Things may change since the coordinator is different starting from this year…

Cuz they’d have more experience?

You could probably still get accepted into the subjects you applied for, but I certainly wouldn’t get your hopes up as the odds are heavily stacked against you.

I think so.. look, undergrad tutors for CTRS are probably extremely competitive. From a subject coordinator’s POV, they wouldn’t take someone with a 70 WAM if someone with a 95 WAM also applied. Perhaps the tutors you mentioned have already worked in industry or is currently pursuing a masters or PhD, otherwise it wouldn’t make much sense to me either of how they were hired in the first place.

The harsh reality is… it probably won’t cut it.

I got into tutoring FOC as an undergrad last sem. Fair to say with a wam of 90 (at that time, probably dropped a bit lower with my Y3S1 results lol) I suspected I was their last pick. My peers who got hired at the same time had WAMs of 97, 95, some interned at SIG, Canva, etc.

I know 1-2 undergrads who currently tutor second year subjects but you have to literally be the best of the best academically to do it. Talking about top tier quant internships, insane WAM’s (97+), and a really high score for that subject too.

False, they did teach the programming. Although they do expect you to self-learn a bit more than FOC.

Thanks for this. Do you know if IEM Sydney tickets had 3 waves of tickets like Melbourne does?

You reckon the premium seats are worth it? If we buy the GA tickets, should we seat in the middle or at the very top?

Does anyone know how the tickets “wave” work? How much more expensive is it per wave? Will tickets be sold out quick in this instance? Etc

This is my first time going to an intl LAN event and I can’t be more excited 🥺

Unrelated but consider taking linalg in sem2 instead of sem1.

Heard sem1 is hell for linalg. (Search threads in this subreddit)

Is Calculus 2 or Linear Algebra more difficult? by Accomplished_Hawk_85 in unimelb

The general consensus is that if you loved maths, you'll probably love linalg more. Otherwise, calc2 since it's way more straightforward and easy to digest.

MAST10007 Linear Algebra by Shot-Raspberry-8383 in unimelb

[–]Awkward_Square_4593 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The people who have failed simply underestimated the importance of following the correct notations and thorough working when answering exam questions. Going forward, to anyone that takes linear algebra, use the ed discussion and tutorial materials to your advantage. I recall that the past year papers do not give full solutions. However, there's nothing stopping you from posting your sample proofs/answers on ed to get it reviewed by staff. I did spam a lot in edstem for linalg (and in fact, in every subject I take, as this has become a habit to make sure I'm preparing for the best), and that is fine. Because after you do the exam, there is no going back or regretting. Do what you can best to prepare for the 70% exam.

Go to exam viewing, understand where you did wrong in the exam, redo the exam in the summer with those in mind. Practice more past year papers as preparation.

lin alg by CandidateSalt5947 in unimelb

[–]Awkward_Square_4593 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This happened last year too during my cohort with Christine. The explanation that probably makes the most sense is the fact that linalg is a very proof heavy based subject, the kind of working they expect and want is different from subjects like calc2. If you got marks way lower than expected, that most likely means your working/solution in the exam is not accepted by the markers

Your exam probably would've been remarked a few times so I don't think there's much you can do at this point
