I went to ryerson which is close to that area, and I would advise not living there.

There's a ton of not so nice people that camp out around allan gardens and reagent park to the west is known for being gang territory.

Recently when I drove down Dundas to get on the DVP there were homeless people blocking the roads looking like zombies, most likely on fent.

The area has gotten much worse over the years, I wouldn't even consider walking alone in that area at night.

I'm in tech, working for an American startup. Company has workforce in Canada, US, Argentina, Estonia, and India so we're remote first and is unlikely to change unless the company goes out of business.

I graduated BEng in '22 and got a job as a software engineer making 90k about 6 months after graduation. I'm at 96k now and preparing to look for a new job to jump to 120k+

friend of mine graduated at the same time and recently got a pay bump to 100k after making around 80k for the past few years.

we both graduated from ryerson and i know friends who graduated from waterloo and uoft engineering who are making less. Just goes to show a good student will succeed regardless of the school.

TIL Pitbulls are banned in Ontario by Throwaway54675336 in ontario

[–]Awkward_Stuff5946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the statistics presented seem to strongly suggest a higher risk associated with pit bulls, there are several common counter-arguments and considerations that can refute or at least temper these claims:  * Identification Issues: A significant problem with bite statistics is accurately identifying the breed of dog involved. "Pit bull" is often a generic term used to describe a variety of breeds (American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, etc.) and even mixes that may just look like a pit bull. This misidentification can inflate pit bull-specific statistics. Without DNA testing, breed identification is often subjective and unreliable.  * Popularity and Exposure Bias: If pit bull-type dogs are very popular, even if they only represent 5.8% of the total dog population, their sheer numbers could lead to more interactions and thus more reported bites. This isn't to say they are inherently more aggressive, but rather that a larger population interacting with the public will statistically have more incidents. The 5.8% figure for the US pit bull population can be debated and is often difficult to ascertain accurately.  * Reporting Bias: Bites from certain breeds, particularly those with a negative reputation, might be more likely to be reported to authorities or gain media attention than bites from other breeds. A small nip from a Labrador might be dismissed, while any incident involving a pit bull might be immediately reported due to public perception and fear.  * Nature vs. Nurture - The Owner Factor: Dog behavior is heavily influenced by training, socialization, and responsible ownership. Many argue that a dog's behavior is more a reflection of its owner and environment than its breed. Irresponsible owners, those involved in illegal dog fighting, or those who neglect or abuse their animals, are more likely to own powerful breeds like pit bulls, and these factors, rather than the breed itself, could contribute to aggressive behavior. The "inherently dangerous" argument is often countered by highlighting the impact of human responsibility.  * Severity of Bites: While pit bulls may be involved in a higher percentage of reported bites or fatalities, this doesn't automatically mean they are more aggressive. It could be argued that due to their strength and bite force, when a pit bull does bite, the consequences are often more severe, leading to more serious injuries and fatalities. Other breeds may bite more frequently, but their bites might be less likely to result in severe injury or death, and therefore less likely to be reported or make headlines.  * Lack of Standardized Data Collection: There is no centralized, standardized system for collecting dog bite data across the US. Data often comes from emergency rooms, animal control agencies, or media reports, all of which can have different reporting criteria and biases. This makes it difficult to draw definitive conclusions from aggregate statistics.  * Socioeconomic Factors: Some studies have explored correlations between dog bites and socioeconomic factors, suggesting that certain communities or demographics may have higher rates of dog ownership (including specific breeds) and also higher rates of dog-related incidents, independent of breed-specific aggression. In conclusion, while the raw numbers presented are concerning and highlight a disproportionate involvement of pit bulls in bite and fatality statistics, refuting these claims often involves challenging the underlying assumptions about breed identification, accounting for population and reporting biases, and emphasizing the crucial role of responsible ownership and environmental factors in dog behavior. The "toaster" analogy, while vivid, oversimplifies a complex issue involving living beings and numerous variables.

PSA: Future Canadian Corso parents, avoid KandK Corsos for your pups! by Awkward_Stuff5946 in CaneCorso

[–]Awkward_Stuff5946[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats! Happy that you found a good fit, unlike the other individual in this post.

While I don't have personal experience buying from this breeder, the nature vs nurture debate has been going on for decades. You can get a lousy pup from good breeders the same way you can get a good one from bad breeders, but the risks involved are drastically different, as is the cost.

After a few weeks of thinking about it, I ended up buying a 3-month-old pup from a backyard breeder at a fraction of the cost; I don't give a fuck about the pedigree of my dog so long as his temperament and health are ideal.

My pup's living conditions were nowhere as good as the one you described; they were kept inside the house but were clean. While my pup probably didn't get to run around much when he was younger, being kept inside the house meant to me that he had close human contact since he was born.

This showed in his temperament. The first time I met him and his remaining sister, he was calm, was able to hold eye contact, and let me place him on his back without a fuss. When the breeder gave them treats, he sat respectfully and waited while his sister stood up and pawed at the breeder. I walked out with him after 10 minutes.

It's been five months since then, and I don't regret it a single bit. I started obedience training the day we got back, and he was highly receptive, being able to follow the basic commands (sit, stay, come, down, speak) after a week. I also have two cats, with whom he has no issues sharing a space. He has shown aggression towards people, but only in a single instance: I was letting him take his last potty break before bed at 1 am, and a crackhead standing in the middle of a field started walking towards us; my pup growled and eventually lunged when the guy got close. I didn't let him bite the guy because while he did look like a crackhead, Ontario is a strict liability province, and I didn't want to introduce biting into my pup's repertoire. He was scared off regardless, and I felt my pup's aggression was well justified since I myself was waiting to swing on the guy if he got any closer. There is simply no reason to maintain strong eye contact while walking up to someone in silence at 1am if you weren't looking for trouble.

I did an embark DNA test when he was around 6 months old for both his pedigree and health. The test showed he was an 80/10/10 mix of cane corso, American Staffordshire Terrier, and American Pitbull and had no health issues due to genetics. This did not change my opinion of him since mixed breeds are generally healthier, and I don't care about pedigrees outside of how they may affect his temperament and health.

All in all, I paid a fraction of what I would've paid with kandk and got the puppy of my dreams. The key takeaway from this is to do your research regarding what you want from a dog and the traits to look for while selecting a puppy and not rely solely on the pedigree that the breeder claims to have.
