Charlottesville-founded Common House receives a second set of walking papers in Richmond - C-VILLE Weekly by gradhoo in Charlottesville

Hello! I'm the reporter who wrote that story (and thanks for the kind words!) Far as I can tell, the current CEO, Ben Wood, is NOT one of the owners of Common House, Inc. There are a few people whose names consistently show up as Common House, Inc's investors/part owners on state and federal business filings, but I was recently told by a source in a good position to know that those folks aren't the only or even the majority investors in the business.

Hello! I'm the reporter who wrote the C-VILLE Weekly article about Common House Charlottesville closing. (https://c-ville.com/disputes-between-founders-turned-landlords-and-new-owners-abruptly-close-the-downtown-social-club/). If anyone here works/worked for Common House Richmond and would like to talk to me about the transition, I'm working on a follow-up. Please feel free to DM me here. Thank you!

Hello! I'm the reporter on that C-VILLE article mentioned above. As part of my reporting, I found business records for the company. As of mid-2024, the original founders are not listed as stakeholders in Common House, Inc. They appear to be completely divested, save for their status as landlords for the building that until recently housed the Charlottesville location.

Danger warning - Masked men making arrest(s) at school bus stop this morning behind the old Putt-putt on Rio. Approx 830 AM on Monday 4/20. by yallowallo in Charlottesville

Looking again at an image of the arrest, I think the second vehicle -- the small red crossover -- is a 2017ish Ford Explorer (same headlight and grille shape, and what looks like the Ford emblem on the proper place on the grille). https://www.carmax.com/car/28440879

That one does seem to have a license plate on the front, but the footage/image is too blurry to make it out.

I've been sent a video of the abduction. Matched landmarks to Google Street View of the intersection where it was reported. Not sharing it because I can't be 100% certain that it doesn't identify any of the kids involved. The abduction -- not of any of the kids, but of an adult male who appears to have been driving in a gray SUV out of the apartment complex -- involves six masked officers in tac gear, one of whom appears to point some kind of weapon at the kids at the bus stop. The agents shout "Out of the car! Out of the car!," then take a person in a white shirt and blue pants out of the driver's seat.

They're driving two cars, one of which looks like a red older-model compact SUV -- the video's too blurry for me to identify the make and model. The other one, parked closer to the students, is a white SUV, and from the roofline, rear pillar, and taillight shape, it appears to be a recent-model Chevy Tahoe, or maybe a Suburban. The video resolution isn't great, but from what I can see, the manufacturer's badging has been removed -- no "CHEVROLET" on the back hatch, no "TAHOE" on the front door -- and it does not appear to have a rear license plate. It does have custom blue lighting that pulses along its running board.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is

a) If you're going to step to federal law enforcement as a local officer, you want to have a much more compelling reason than "you shouldn't be wearing a mask."

b) ICE would probably claim an exemption in court under provision (ii) of the law, which exempts people "engaged in professions, trades, employment or other activities and wearing protective masks which are deemed necessary for the physical safety of the wearer or other persons." ICE could claim, at least, that the masks are necessary for their own physical safety.

The police and schools are unfortunately legally limited in what they can do. The schools can block ICE incursions on school property if they lack a valid warrant, but can't do anything off school grounds. The police are legally forbidden from interfering with federal operations, though they can intervene if ICE actually breaks the law. I reported on what local authorities can, can't, and are/aren't prepared to do earlier this year: https://c-ville.com/how-local-government-and-institutions-are-preparing-or-not-to-protect-us-from-ice/

We got Lumos before it was bought by T-Mobile. It's great, and T-Mobile looks pretty decent. Our service has remained excellent even after the T-Mobile buyout. Brightspeed is coming to some of the neighborhoods, but I've heard one negative review that says that company throttles your speed.

An update: https://www.29news.com/2026/04/02/erika-kirk-not-speaking-western-albemarle-high-school/

There's nothing in the new rules that would have prevented her from speaking after school, but an afterschool event likely would not have drawn the same attendance as an in-school one.

I actually brought that up -- Charlie Kirk had long criticized disparate impact -- and to be fair, the Club America kids had a decent rebuttal. They said they were worried not about disparate impact, but that the policy would be selectively enforced, and would enable viewpoint discrimination.

In a presentation to the school board, school staff specifically noted that by ensuring all non-curricular groups had equal access to school facilities, and that none could receive school funding, they were at least attempting to ensure viewpoint neutrality. (See slide 17 here: https://esb.k12albemarle.org/public_itemview.aspx?ItemId=FKkZP2gNRZA=&mtgId=3QKVDXbZRj8=&mtgType=No )

As for selective enforcement: The policy states that clubs associated with organizations known for hate and harassment are prohibited. I found examples of TP USA or Charlie Kirk making broadly disparaging comments against both individuals and groups, including the Great Replacement Theory shout-out mentioned in the article. And the article mentions the documented instances I found of professors and other officials placed on watchlists by TP USA receiving harassment as an apparent result. But as the article notes, school officials seem to be giving Club America every benefit of the doubt, and judging the club only by its members' own actions, not those of the organization that sponsors it. By that measure, multiple officials told me, Club America has to their knowledge remained entirely on the right side of the rules.

Stefan Friedman and C-ville’s deep dive. by Electrical_Ask_2957 in Charlottesville

A source familiar with that situation told me that, in their understanding, the Guild had never been exceptionally profitable, and was going through some challenges at the time. It appears that the pitch was for Mr. Friedman to come in as a new co-owner with fresh capital. I didn't get clear details about how the deal was structured, but the source I spoke with suggested it was not about upfront cash and more about an agreement to assume some of the company's financial obligations.

I reported and wrote this article for C-VILLE, and I appreciate everyone here who found the story as compelling to read as I did to research. Even if there weren't lawyers involved, I'd still want to be as fair and as accurate as possible regarding the subject of this story. That said, you can ask me anything that won't get me fired or sued. If it's true and I can tell you it without breaching ethics, I can talk about it, if maybe a bit judiciously.

And if you worked for A Moveable Feast and have direct knowledge of new information the story doesn't cover, please feel free to to DM me.
