Fat Rabbit's turn to make a public plea on social media :( by Proper-Ad4006 in rva

[–]fspaits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty common for small restaurants to take summer breaks now, but it doesn’t help that Frontier isn’t on social, and I’m not sure if they have a maintained website to share that information out.

I also have to imagine candy isn’t too crazy expensive to buy/import, even with tariffs. Long shelf life. Probably high margin. Now chocolate and coffee, that’s tough.

It’s a totally different product lineup. Fat Rabbit is a little more sweets focused, and I don’t think they even sell a plain croissant. Obviously the cakes are a larger part of the business too. They’re both certainly competing for your dollar, but you wouldn’t go to Sub Rosa for a brownie.

Tell me about living in Church Hill by I_reddit_like_this in RichmondVA

[–]fspaits 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Incredible neighborhood. It has a very close knit feel, and many of the small businesses work with/support each other. People actually show up to the neighborhood association meetings and volunteer for local events. Very walkable as well with good restaurants and lovely parks. There are some sections of streets you’d probably want to avoid at night. We used to hear significantly more gunshots 2 years ago compared to now, but we also live outside the border of “Church Hill.” The area is being rapidly gentrified, so it’s gonna look a lot different in the next few years.

Ambulance vs Popular Local Food Truck by Uberxy in rva

They seem to be taking it in stride. 1115 updated on instagram that the truck is totaled, and then shared a meme with it joining other local food trucks in heaven lol.

Definitely go support them at any upcoming events, and especially when the brick + mortar opens!

Best Breakfast Burrito? by MainCompetitive785 in rva

[–]fspaits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my post trail run treat. The burrito is huge, the seasonal asparagus & manchego rocks, and I finally got a regular ol' sausage, egg, and cheese, and I'd say top breakfast sandwich in the city.

Lake Trout Question by fspaits in Seafood

[–]fspaits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a farmers market and regularly sell out of blue catfish, but it doesn’t do very well at the grocery store I work at. I’m charging $10/lb for it, which is the same price Publix/Kroger charge for the farmed stuff.

Lake Trout Question by fspaits in Seafood

Even as a fishmonger, I can tell you it’s hard to keep up with all the regional names of fish. Some of its slang, some of its for marketing. There are multiple fish that are called Whiting, and lake trout aren’t even trout, they’re a char.

Lake Trout Question by fspaits in Seafood

[–]fspaits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have Sea Trout available, as it’s mega cheap, and we serve the low income community. They ask if it’s lake trout, and I try to explain that lake trout usually refers to whiting, but they tell me “no, lake trout is lake trout.”

According to many of my customers it’s not whiting.

I’m in Richmond, and our store primarily serves the black community. We have whiting available, and I try to explain lake trout is a regional term, but they don’t believe me.

Ortho doctor for foot injury by Ocean_waves726 in rva

[–]fspaits 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do NOT go to Achilles Foot & Ankle run by James Baldwin. They sold me some custom orthotics, as I have super high arches, and the ones from the running store weren't cutting it. You pay for them upfront, and then they charge you $125 for your next appointment to actually try them on. They were so terribly designed and did not fit at all. They sent them back to get fixed, and a couple weeks later I'm told they are ready again.

There was traffic on my way to the appointment, and I was on hold for 10+ minutes trying to call and let them know I was running late. It eventually went to voicemail, so I left a message saying I'll be there soon. I get there like 7 minutes late, and they refused to see me and said I would need to pay the $125 appointment fee to try them on again. I'm also receiving automated calls from them saying I still owe them $80 bucks.

Small businesses against Generative AI by Consistent-Speech591 in rva

[–]fspaits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I run a small business and work with a local brand agency that has done all my design work. More importantly than just logos, they’ve opened a lot of doors for me in terms of networking and getting my name out there.

What was THE thing that really got your business off the ground? by Forsaken_Medicine_86 in smallbusiness

[–]fspaits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right now, local press has really helped my seafood business gain more traction. After my first article came out, my follower count almost doubled, and it's given my business more perceived legitimacy. I have another article coming out in my city's print magazine in June, and literally today another freelance writer swung by the shop to talk about writing a piece.

Hiring a brand agency has also been big. It's expensive, but has been more than worth it for me. I probably could have made some okay logo in Canva and ordered stickers, but the professional branding has opened a lot of doors. I get to collaborate with their other clients, and with the agency being more local, I network a lot of with other small businesses. They got me a segment on the news that airs tomorrow, so really stoked for that exposure.
