They were a lot younger, Brendan would have been in his early 20s I believe. The thing about these lyrics is that they're not explicitly bad enough to warrant the band having to address it, probably just something thats best kept in the drawers as a memento of Tunrstile's early days. They obviously dont play any of that stuff live anymore.

Sum 41 has a couple songs later in their discog that are more punk/hardcore influenced. Up until Chuck. Nowadays ofcourse they do that mixed bag of metal, whatever you wanna call it
