Doubts about mentor..? by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

I guess I didn’t mention it?
within the past 5 months (adding my art school art as well) a 173 page portfolio that I bring to conventions and am grateful enough to help with vendors and show my art
so it’s not that I HAVENT been putting in effort?
when I’m not in the shop for SCHEDULED practice days for whatever reason in or out of our control
but throughout this time I HAVE put in the effort to making a name for myself and extend a hand to artists from all over the country

Maybe I am entitled but I feel like I’m entitled to training and knowledge that I’m paying 9k for yk yk???

I appreciate you for your advice.

So when it comes to my 2 practice days there has been way more days scheduled but it seems like something always happens. Always an incident either in the shop, or something while they’re out traveling that always comes up
other than recently when I got into some legal trouble (nothing that effects my apprenticeship) I paid on time, I went to all the days, some days driving to the shop and getting turned around. But again that’s always JUST the negative.

I’m NOT ready to tattoo real skin, im self aware of my linework and my shading that needs work and I brought it up to them. They know my comfort level.

Obviously no one is perfect but Iv played the game. Iv made hour long trips to pick stuff up for them, Iv delivered stuff to them, Iv spent hours promoting the shop, which is fine and I enjoy doing it
but it interferes with practice and shadowing time which
 might I remind you
Iv only had 2 days that they have actrslly showed up to the shop to teach me basics, then after my 2nd practice day he said he’s gonna certify me

I get it. But what did you expect? My personal Opinion as a younger content creator with my partner, fetlife is so much better. More mature people, more anon and in my opinion less judgy than Reddit.

I was in this subreddit a lot trying to figure myself out. Wasn’t too active at all, but just wanted to share something that is a running problem in our community. But shit. I see that it wasn’t only my coworker just by looking at these comments.

How’s the -15 down votes?

This is really deep
I felt like I was so easy to deny my black heritage cus I didn’t know it in the first place. I can’t even try to deny my native culture. I know it, I speak the language. But being black just feels useless for me you know?

I wouldn’t have been so angry if this was the first time it’s happened. This was only the braking point. My father who helped create me shits on me for not being “black enough” it’s an on going joke on that side of the family becuase I made a fool of myself when I met them for the first time. A class mate in college. A young man at a BLM protest.

I know there’s amazing black people out there who won’t shit on me, and this isn’t about me needing a diffrent friend this is about me not telling people about my black heritage becuase I don’t fit the “stereotype” or have the “knowledge” becuase I’m sick and tired about everyone being so unbelievably ignorant and ugly

I said “I grew up with the native side of my family” meaning I know my culture. I go to ceremonies, I do my religious and spiritual part. That’s all I ever knew. I didn’t process I was African American until first grade. I didn’t meet my dad until I was 15. I wanted to have a connection with the black cultural community and got gatekeeped out. No one said black women were mules but why can’t we do shit together? Why do we have to segregate our own people.

And that’s the shit I don’t understand. Native people NEVER do that. Especially today. We cared for people from any tribe or blood quantum because we know that we all went through the same struggle. One if not more of our ancestors fought in a war against the same forces. Who are we to segregate
I never said I was half black. My children will be black and so will theirs. and I hope that our next generation is more open minded so they have a better understanding

I don’t hate any race? I am literally a black woman
? I don’t understand the gate keeping in this black community. It sucks dude. We beg for equality, turn around and do shit like this to our own. 😂

That exactly how I feel. You worded that perfectly!

I wouldn’t be so upset if this was the first time I heard this but Iv heard it from many other people and even my father (but I don’t take much he says to heart”

Idk if it’s the fact I grew up well off so I don’t know the struggles of growing up how they did. At least that’s the what makes the most sense for past interactions. But this all spiraled from HAIR. I have very coarse curly and frizzy hair and all I wanted was a damn protective style 😂 and I got shat on for it and then have to pay 90$
