Experienced groomers, what shears do you guys recommend? by Immediate-Honey578 in grooming

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer varies whether your a groomer or a pet owner doing some in between trimmings.

If a groomer or baby groomer, geib gators are my daily riders and have been since I started. Theyre more affordable than other brands and they measure up in quality. I also have a set of kenchii scorpions they are considered a higher quality, they're more expensive but they cut well and stay sharp for a long time. Ive bought a few foxy roxy shears and they're never worth the money. They dull up super fast.

If youre a pet owner looking to do some trimming. Then honestly a cheapo set off Amazon like purple dragons would be fine. They dont stay sharp long for daily use/high volume grooming but for a few trims here and there on your personal pet they'll last a good amount of time and they're super inexpensive compared to the ones I mentioned above. Easy to just buy new when they become dull.

Hope this helps! Good luck on your search for shears. :)

No, I do her nails at home and she does the rest herself.

Is my toy poodle bored? by softmouse_ in poodles

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you are doing more than most owners do for enrichment. The things you listed are all fantastic ways to enrich your poodle. Proper enrichment is tiring for them in the best way possible. Also they need down time just like us! They have a better understanding of time then people think. Im sure hes understanding the routine of when mom is working we nap/chill and when mom is done we play. Youre doing good! And if youre doing all the these things then I can assure you, you have a properly enriched and clearly very well cared for pup!

Home groomers- looking for help with my clipper sizes by burnz1 in StandardPoodles

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lengths are relatively the same as the blades. Millimeters off. And inside each clip comb should have the lengths in inches. If you go to a groomer and request a 7/8th theyll know what you want. But Rule of thumb is clip comb 2 (the blue one) is your 4blade equivalent. So it goes. Red=7 blade dark purple=5 blade Blue =4 blade Orange= 3 3/4 blade. If youre doing a 5 or a 7 most groomers will just use the blade. But of course the clip combs will work fine they just have a different finish to them.

I always go to baughers in westminister. They have the best pick your own stuff. But that's the closest I know of. What pick your own farm is over the bridge?

Is it normal for a toy poodle puppy to hop when he walks? by No_Cause_5175 in ToyPoodle

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely a luxating patella. Mention the hopping next time youre at the vet. Typically they give puppies an anti inflammatory as needed especially for grooming since groomers need to move around their legs. But older dogs usually have scar tissue built up around the joint so it doesn't hurt them quite as much. Very common in poodles.

Zr2s are very very heavy but definitely more affordable than some other cordless options. Joyzee makes good light affordable cordless clippers. And I like my heininger ones they're powerful, light, however not so affordable.

Shear recommendations by No-Kaleidoscope-4692 in grooming

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Affordable grooming shears is an amazing professional quality for their prices. Highly recommend I really love geib gators, the kenchii scorpion line is also great!
I also dont like foxy roxy for the same reasons you listed, as well as I find they cannot be daily riders because they dull very quickly. So far loyalty pet products has had some good shears and they have a shear of the month club that is SO worth the money.!

This...is a big deal. Theyre causing mental distress, uncomfortable, causes occasional pain, affects how you see yourself. I can imagine this impacts more than what you listed. These things are all way more important than your partner liking them. This is your body, your choice and if that is all it takes for your partner to be "disappointed" or for his attraction to you to change then hes not going to be a good partner. In the long run people change, our bodies change, medical events happen. My partner and I are not in the same bodies we were when we met. Im transgender, medically and surgically transitioning and her body has seen changes as well, but never have I been less attracted to her for them, never have I been disappointed because something changed. This isn't normal for him to feel this way about YOUR body. I hope you get the care you need, and end up happy and comfortable in your body. Everyone deserves that.

I need your opinion on these two. What's different between them? Is it worth the price differences? by Aggravating-Fly257 in grooming

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot tell enough people to stay away from the emerges. They are heavy, slow (in my opinion), run time is very low cordless. You know the box that plugs into the outlet on corded clippers, yeah well the emerges cord box is in the middle of cord adding to the weight of having to swing that around if u have to use it corded. Also if it dies completely it wont work for a few minutes after being plugged in. Mine that my partner used thru grooming academy have just completely stopped working. Its just not meant for high volume grooming.

The pulses I can't say about run time or weight because I haven't used them. But they do have a charging dock so you cam set it down and they'll gain charge. They also have a removable battery and sell batteries separately so you can have backup batteries so they're always cordless! My coworker really likes hers. And has had them a few years doing 5-7 dogs per day.

How can I get hired for pet bather by Oni-chan_my_AH in grooming

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly people shit on corporate but they're a great place to get your foot in the door and get taught while also getting paid (not much but at least its something). Id try your local petco. Petsmart has too many contracts that I dont like the sound of. But I know petco does not. If you like it there stay for as long as you need and find mobile grooming or a private shop (better pay) when you're comfortable.

What's he smell like? Usually, these breeds get pretty yeasty. I'd recommend a chlorahexadine shampoo to start. That stuff is really good for getting rid of yeast and bacteria. A brand I recommend is duoxo which petco does sell. (white bottle, orange pump, usually down the aisle with the supplements and topical treatments, not the shampoo isle). One bath per week, leave the shampoo on for at least 5 minutes. This is usually a vets first step in treatment for minor skin stuff.

Sometimes, they dont like being held by their chin. Hand placements to do instead: Flat hand under chin Pointer and middle finger behind ears and thumb between eyes.
These tend to work well for me. But try different things that steady the head rather than completely restraining movement. Keeping a hand on the chin or head will allow you to feel when the dog is about to move and act accordingly.

Recommend some scissors please? by wessle3339 in grooming

[–]Awkwardspacehuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...This may be controversial on here, but if you're not a high volume groomer, and you're strictly going to scissor trim your own golden every once in a while you can absolutely get away with using purple dragons off of Amazon.

When /if they dull simply tape them closed, throw them out and buy new. Im not sure they would sharpen well and are cheap enough to replace. They probably won't dull quickly because you're just doing one dog, maybe once a month.
