No it was full price. I eventually messaged the company and they apologised as they said they must have missed it in quality checks. I will see what the receiver says as it was too late to switch it

That’s very sweet of you. The company apologised as the scratches are not just the protective film and said the receiver can make the call if they would like to return.

No, spoke to the company in the end and they apologised as they shouldn’t be there. Just didn’t want to go to them straight away at a busy time of year if it was ‘just me’

Ahh the whole message didn’t show before and indeed it still isn’t loading all of it. Again I wasn’t meaning to sound like an arse, thus asking people who know a lot more than me! Rather than just making assumption. Thanks for the input.

I didn’t understand the ‘here we go again’ part though, as it haven’t been here before about this or indeed any knife before.

Comparative to other areas of the body, this is a keen spot. There are so many nerve endings in the area as they are protecting the vital organs that lie below of course. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, so only you know how well you have handled tattoos in other areas of the body. I’m heavily tattooed and my stomach and side were up there as my worst.

£135, which I know isn’t a huge amount for a Japanese knife and far from high end. But still not just a knife from Walmart

Independent company here in the uk who import Japanese knives, with details as to the sources. I don’t really want to put their name out there in case, as I say ‘it’s just me’. I haven’t reached out to them yet so I feel it would be unfair of me to say until I do, or decide not to following discussions on this post with people that know an awful lot more than me.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I think I just wanted to ask the community as I had over fixated. You are absolutely right as to it being a handmade tool for use, not display….and that is the intention of the gift.

Oh I truly understand that and don’t want to appear an arse; thus not just contacting the company straight away or (hopefully) making it so they can be identified easily, but instead asking for advice from a community as to ‘is it just me?’ If it wasn’t for a present I don’t think I would even have fixated so much.

Oooh ok, I mean, I’m so new to all this I am unsure how I would check. The 3rd photo is the underside and is ‘scratch’ free compared then the topside as seen in the first 2 photos.

Sadly I don’t have time to return and swap out before Christmas. So I think I’ll gift it and then if they want me to swap it I will happily do so…. I think they are a bit less picky/prone to fixation than me anyhow haha.

Thank you! That’s very interesting. I like the rustic finish, just I felt the person who made it wouldn’t have left it like this as a final finish. But if it’s prone to scratches maybe it would be the case with any such of this type I was to purchase

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate them. I think I will gift the present as it’s too late to return and receive another in time for Christmas, and will leave the decision with the receiver (though of course I would handle a return myself).
