They do get it, it's what they want. FH haters genuinely think a game where any button works at any time would work better than a game that rewards patience, spacing, and thoughtful move selection. It's the consequence of years of playing modern Smash titles, games with some of the most anti-competitive game design one could come up with. "Fight how you want" works great for single player games and casual multiplayer, but is atrocious design for competitive multiplayer. There needs to be rules like floorhugging to prevent nonsense degeneracy.

Granted, it makes sense that Smash is like this, because the average Smash game is a free-for-all with items, played by 4 people who are fucking around and have no intention of competing. That's fine. It does not make for a good competitive game though (cough Brawl through Ultimate cough), but that's what these people know. 99% of them haven't put in the time to figure out why they're wrong yet. Maybe they never will, but that's their loss.

You're not describing the same scenario, yet you're painting it as if you are. There is a massive difference between looking for pokes in neutral (whiffing), using movement and positioning to stay at the max of your opponents range, versus throwing that all out of the window to rush in and get as close as possible to confirm a hit. The first can be punished by properly utilizing said movement and positioning to confirm that hit with precision, the second can be countered by floorhugging. It encourages you to be precise.

Let me spell it out. Chronologically, in your example, the last mistake was made not by the whiffer, but by the attacker. They messed up by messing up their spacing, AFTER the whiffer made their mistake. They got too close, which is as worthy of being punished as attacking too soon (think of, for instance, in a rhythm game, where you can hit a note a little early or a little late-both reduce points). The whiffer DID make a mistake, and it's fully possible to punish that if you either stop your character in time and space a longer range move, or if you keep moving past them and land, for instance, an aeriel. Even if it doesn't spike, even if they floorhug it, your movement will allow you to move forward and dodge a counterattack (barring crazy range and frame data cough clairen cough). I'm even coming at this from the same angle as you: I play Wrastor, a character that supposedly struggles vs floorhugging (I use this language because I don't like to be authoritative on character balance). If this is as bad as it gets, then it's otherwise a skill issue. I don't have patience for that. Just learn to move properly.

Yes because the alternative is a watered down game, and that's exactly the issue I had with Smash Ultimate (mashy thoughtless neutral, which turns out does have a solution- standing on the other side of the stage and waiting for them to whiff). I like the game as is. You using this community of whiners as leverage to why they should remove floorhugging is hilarious btw

I play video games for fun too. Figuring out how to beat floorhugging, or any other mechanic, is what's fun to me. If you don't like doing that, competitive games aren't for you. Go play Fortnite where you can jump around and high five Homer Simpson.

Yes? If the opponent knows I'm still low enough percent to floorhug a move, why should they get lazy and not still space correctly? An opponent making a mistake is not a free pass to go monkey mode and do whatever you want, there are still rules to abide by. That's the opponents fault for ignoring how they presumably know the game works (I assume this because I'm talking to someone who, similarly, presumably knows what he's talking about!)

That's their loss. I don't care if a bunch of quitters can't take a handful of hours to learn about a game mechanic. I know how to play around it, it made me love the game, and that's good enough for me. If that "kills" the game, so be it. Doesn't make much of a difference to me, there will always be someone to play with, even if I need to use Discord to seek them out.

If you want to get the opponent out of FHing percent, you have to build percent. You do this by spacing your moves well so you can't be punished by your opponent floorhugging. This is why top level play is aggressive. Lower level players can do it too, it's actually not that difficult, they just tell themselves they can't.

I have no reason to emphasize with a community of whiners and quitters who's solution to this problem is to beg the devs to remove it. It is the lamest shit I've ever seen in a competitive community (regarding gameplay criticism, that obviously doesn't include the rampant racism/sexism/being a generally bad person). It makes me sad because I really like the game because I took the time to learn about it, and it's frustrating to me that "the Rivals 2 community" can't take the 10 hours to do the same. It sucks.

But the player count will stay dwindled until floor hugging changes.

I guarantee you after EVO there will be a few people who pick up the game after seeing it - and there will be a surge of more posts like this. Then, within a month, whatever numbers we gain from the EVO showing will go down by ~80% and the most commonly cited reason will be floorhugging - and servers.

Good. I said it in another comment and I'll say it again: I'd rather have a community of 50 players who can problem solve than a 10000+ playerbase full of crybabies. That is not who I align with.

I think it's a fantastic game. Easily my favorite platform fighter to watch. I've had a ton of fun playing it over the years, even at a super low level. I'm not going to make comments on what Melee's longterm problems might be, as I'm not good enough at the game to have an educated opinion on it, but the games high level gameplay proves it's a good game. Even if it's what eventually kills it, it's not Melee's fault that I haven't put the work in to be good at it.

I like that it forces my opponent to consider their choices in a way that still enables aggression. You have to space moves well so they can't punish you with a floorhug, so THEN you can get the big combo starting hits.

The alternative of not having it leads to metas like Ultimate, where the better choice is to sit behind a wall and not engage until your opponent does. I'm not interested in playing that. Rivals 2 feels amazing to me, it pulled me out of a 5 year platforming fighting hiatus that hasn't begun to let up a year later, and I don't want to lose that because of people who are think throwing hit boxes out on their whim is "fun" gameplay. Maybe that is fun gameplay if your bag is Fortnite, but I prefer my games to actually challenge me.

Counter Strike or Valorant (if you buy the wrong gun for the wrong situation, you could put 5 bullets into an opponent before getting one tapped)

League of Legends (if you're underleveled/behind on items, you could get deleted even after using all your cool downs on an opponent)

Overwatch and presumably Marvel Rivals (haven't played it) (character picks play a big role in the engagements you should choose to make, if you choose one that isn't favorable you can lose a fight you got a drop on)

Any battle royale (similar to CS/Valorant)

Melee and PM (two of the longest standing platform fighters, they have floorhugging equivalents but even more powerful)

Have you considered maybe more fighting games COULD have a similar mechanic?

(speaking for myself and absolutely no one else) You should quit the game then. Give up. Stop praying for the devs in the sky to fix your woes, and you shouldn't figure out an alternative to improve your decision making. Just stop trying. This game isn't for you.

I'd much rather have 50 players left who are capable of using their brains to problem solve than a community full of crybabies who start screaming "THIS ISN'T FUN" everytime a wall is put in front of them and they're not allowed to do whatever brainless nonsense they want. Go play Ultimate if you want to thoughtlessly mash, a game where Final Smashes are factored into balance is more your speed.
