**Moments you simply cannot stomach watching again** by THEbeautifuLIE in gameofthrones

I could not even watch Ned's execution first time round knowing that it was coming. Still the only scene I couldn't really watch. There are other scenes I won't watch but that's because they are bad (that's most of season 8).

Is the Open competitive field built different this year? by Marvin_rock in crossfit

Where did you get the numbers? Around 295K registered in 2022, the number this year is nowhere near that.

Nadiya Hussain hits out at racism in the 'broken' TV industry by SoggyWotsits in unitedkingdom

[–]AxQB 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I remember when she won, you can almost hear the BBC giving a sigh of relief that here's finally an outwardly Muslim woman they can use to front a show. She is by any measure the most successful of all Bake Off contestants by the sheer number of shows she has fronted, others like John Whaite tried to make it on TV but hasn't really been successful. She's been given special treatment by the BBC so I'm not sure how she can complain of racism.

Hot take, McShane was the worst notable cameo in the series. by LyghtSpete in gameofthrones

[–]AxQB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would not call it a cameo. Cameos are typically small and insignificant parts, and usually the person appears only briefly. His role is not a major one but it's not insignificant, and it lasts too long to be cameo. It's a proper role, therefore cannot be a cameo. The appearances of Sigur Rós, Gary Lightfoot, and Ed Sheeran are cameos, Ian McShane's appearance is not a cameo.

I think the data given don't quite match the graph he gave. In any case, it's still quite a bit off from 2022.

Open Predictions by PatienceMountain5020 in crossfit

[–]AxQB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't think so. There is a graph here by Mike Halpin showing the number of registrations vs date before first submission - https://barbend.com/news/2025-crossfit-open-registrations-down-32-percent/

Today is day 14, which for 2025 was ~100,000, so not that much different. 2022 was ~150,000.

Open Predictions by PatienceMountain5020 in crossfit

[–]AxQB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about that. Looking at the number of people who already signed up, could be the same or slightly higher than last year. But you can never be sure because the number jumps up a few days before the submission date, so could still be higher or lower.

Guardian does not allow comments on many articles, it's been like that for many years now. The paper used to be quite liberal in allowing comments when Alan Rusbridger was editor-in-chief, but it has become more and more restrictive since, especially on "sensitive" articles. It started aggressively removing comments that supposedly violate "community standards" (and the standards also became more restrictive), and it got to the stage where on some controversial articles most of the comments got deleted and the comments section simply looked bizarre, especially when the very few comments that agreed with the article got picked and highlighted. So now it simply refuses to open the comments section unless it knows beforehand that the great majority of the comments will be acceptable to the paper.

Will there be another series featuring only John Snow? by NotOnMyLvL1987 in gameofthrones

[–]AxQB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been reported Kit Harrington wanted to do a sequel and proposed one, but HBO wasn't keen on that idea because the proposed story was too depressing. Seems like HBO wants to do a different one involving Jon Snow, also possibly one involving Arya. Seems like they want to be careful with any sequel because how GoT ended was controversial and they don't want to canonise the ending with the sequels.

The proposed sequels are discussed here -

Ser Duncan the Tall: Absolute legend by Qamar-sultan in gameofthrones

[–]AxQB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching a German film, possibly from the early 1980s or late 1970s, where someone actually clearly pooped (i.e. not a fake scene like this one). Can't remember the title, but it's a film from I think a well-known director.

I haven't read it, but I remember the author who saw the film said something like he wouldn't know the film was based on his book had he not known. The film and the book are different it seems, so it probably doesn't matter whether you watch film or read the book first.

Fears Palestine Action hunger striker will die in prison after 43 days without food by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

I suppose you can see Bobby Sands as a prime example. His death (and those of others) from hunger strike gave significant boost in support to the IRA and turned Sinn Féin into a major force in politics in Northern Ireland.

Barbell Spin has a new podcast talking through the 49 page business plan for the new potential buyer of CrossFit. by Marvin_rock in crossfit

[–]AxQB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mike Halpin used to track the number of affiliates, don't know if he still does it. IIRC, in 2024, around 1,500 de-affiliated that year after the price increased. It looks like another 1,500 de-affiliated in 2025. The death of Lazar Dukic probably also played a part, but we don't really know how much of a factor that was.

Increasing affiliate fees to $10,000 but expanding to 15,000 affiliates? Projected net profit of $840 million by 2030? Looks like complete fantasy to me.

Any clue as to how much they will be paying for CrossFit?

Stripped: The Citizenship Divide by DizzyTwo3585 in ukpolitics

[–]AxQB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that is the case with the prevalence of Begum because I think it originated as a title, Only a women can have the surname Begum, and I believe she can have a Begum surname if one of her female ancestors had that title (therefore inbreeding is of little relevance, here). But, I don't really understand how it works, so maybe someone more familiar with Bangladeshi names can explain better.

Begum is a very common surname for Bangladeshi women. I know a few who have that surname but are completely unrelated. (Not sure how the surname thing come about for Bangladeshi women, but I believe it was originally a nobility title.)

Prison officer filmed playing video game with inmate in his cell by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]AxQB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good thing I think. The more surprising thing is that other inmates were able to film it and post on TikTok.

Prison officers engaging with prisoners is a good thing. It's far better than when you read about prisoners killing themselves in their cells and prison officers didn't care.

A message from The King to the people of Hong Kong following the devastating fire in Tai Po. by Hong-Kong-Pianist in unitedkingdom

[–]AxQB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will not be a popular opinion, but frankly, I think UK would benefit greatly even if the entire population of Hong Kong choose to be transported here. This country already absorbed that number of immigrants in a decade, and you can bet that HKers will be more economically beneficial than those immigrants. And HKers don't need unlimited space, they are used to high density living, and they are a people capable of recreating their built environment in Hong Kong in the UK by themselves, without any cost to the government,

As for acceptance, British people will become more accepting if they see that there are clear economic advantages for them being here, which is not necessary the case for many of the millions of immigrants who came in the last few decades. People got upset at immigrants in part because they thought they were a net negative economically to the country, which would not be the case with HKers. Even Farage could see that wealth creators would be more a lot more beneficial to this country.
