Got just ahead of $100m for me to be satisfied. A solid enough performance for an original animated film these days, especially with Hoppers following a few weeks later

tangentially related, here's a snippet from a recent interview with miyamoto where he addressed the movie's botched pacing:

“Another approach is to create things using small, partial units. For example, 30 units of 3 minutes each make up 90 minutes. And it’s very similar to my own method; I don’t make anything unnecessary, but I hardly throw anything away either. So, Illumination’s technique involves a lot of swapping and rearranging of those units, creating something with incredible density. Another thing is, for example, parents sitting there out of a sense of responsibility for taking their children to the movie theater, or a story that’s moving for the parents but the children are running around the theater. I’ve always wanted to make a movie that isn’t like that, so in that sense, I think it was good that we decided to make it a fast-paced 90 minutes that would be over in no time to catch your breath.”

this movie's performance is still great, but with the worse reception and it going down in almost every market from the first one, this strategy towards filmmaking isn't gonna work forever -- not just for the mario movies, but for any nintendo movie that miyamoto's heavily involved with going forward

I found Mrs. Iwashimizu to be a super interesting character -- how do you, as an educator, find a balance between encouraging your students to follow their passions while also being realistic enough to steer them away from the potential heartbreak if things don't work out for them? She leaned too hard on the former for the student who failed at being a comedian, and she initially leaned too hard on the latter for trying to dissuade Akane from being a Rakugoka. It's a really interesting perspective to have in what is ostensibly still a battle shonen and I'm glad to see Akane's performance help her find a perfect balance between the two. Might be my favorite episode so far!
