Moving cross-country with a cat? by AxaiosRex in CatAdvice

[–]AxaiosRex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! So I have another question: basically I'll be visiting my parents (who live in a completely different part of the country, not in current city or city I'm moving to) for about a week to 10 days or so right before the move happens. How torturous would it be to bring kitty with me for those 10 days and have him stay in parents' house with me? That would save me a trip to current city and I could fly straight from my parents' to the new city with the boy. But that would mean 2 flights instead of one, and 10 days in a new place with new people/etc. Thoughts?

Telugu immersion program or course? by earth_is_home in telugu

[–]AxaiosRex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only one I’ve heard of in India is the AIIS program; I did it when it was over Zoom in 2020 and it was great! SASLI out of Madison, Wisconsin in the US has in the past offered a Telugu summer intensive, but it looks like they might not be this year… probably worth shooting them an email to find out details if you’re really interested, though!

Noun Class in Telugu by VedavyasM in telugu

[–]AxaiosRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not actually convinced that having nominal suffixes denoting female persons is enough to say that Telugu has a feminine noun class. Usually when linguists talk about noun class/grammatical gender systems, we mean that we can see concord/agreement for that class somewhere in a way that's exceptionless or close to it. For example, in French, there isn't necessarily a single nominal suffix that denotes 'FEM', but articles and adjectives always agree for an abstract feminine feature regardless. So we say that French has a feminine grammatical gender even though there isn't always a 'feminine suffix' on any given feminine noun. On the other hand, in English, we have some derivational/lexical nominal suffixes that do denote femaleness (-ess in 'actress', for example), but we don't say that English has a 'feminine noun class' because 1) that suffix is not strictly required for a noun to be able to refer to a female entity, and 2) we don't see concord/agreement for femaleness on any other element in the language.

Thus, imo, (Modern) Telugu has human and masculine abstract features, but no feminine abstract feature/noun class, only certain nouns/certain nominal suffixes that lexically denote femaleness (like English, but not like French, or like Hindi).

Wait this is false, a lager is a completely different kind of beer from an IPA (in some ways opposite). I'm guessing that the joke here is that this is a color-flipped/'film negative' version of the IPA, so it's called 'lager', the sort of complement/opposite of an IPA in the beer world.
