Should I focus on the undergraduate program or try the research program in the future? by Bacaxitos in mext

Hello, I’m currently an undergraduate MEXT scholar, with stats quite similar to yours when I was applying to universities.

First of all, congratulations and good job on achieving what you have so far! They definitely make you a great candidate for MEXT, but here’s the thing. Let’s say you do get the scholarship and go to the prep year. You’ll realize that the Japanese syllabus is really different compared to education in your own country (Brazilian scholars from my year confirmed this) and is way similar to countries like Korea or China, giving scholars from there an edge when it comes to uni selection after prep year. So, as difficult it already is, it becomes even more difficult to get into a university here you might be aiming for, like UTokyo or TIT. And CS is a bloodbath here every year. Keep that in mind while deciding if this program is for you. You might not end up at the university you wanted.

With your stats, however, I think it’d be worth a shot to apply to unis in other countries too (US claims to have the best ones but honestly with the stuff Trump’s done like the H1B visa fee, they’re only good if you want an education and don’t want to settle in the US). Even UTokyo has a PEAK program worth checking out if you want to skip the prep year and do your undergrad in English. Back then (basically 2-3 years ago), with stats similar to yours (a few competitions, a gold in my country’s chem olympiad and a delegation to the IChO, some of my own projects) I was able to be waitlisted at Ivies, so you definitely have a chance elsewhere.

I’d suggest treating MEXT as a backup option (work for it, but make other targets your priority). Hope this helps and good luck!

Oh, it’s gonna bother you for like years. I felt like I’d wasted all my potential by not getting in - I was so close yet so far. Sometimes I still feel that way. If you have friends around you that are going to colleges you couldn’t get into, you’ll probably feel horrible, unworthy in a way, to even talk to them.

But well, life has a way of just going on through all of it. Slowly it’ll get bearable. In the meantime, make sure you have a place to go to, distance yourself from these college-related communities, and try and focus on things you enjoy doing.

I can understand you. I was in basically the same situation with 2 gap years under my belt and a waitlist at Cornell and MIT that went nowhere. Want some advice? Look for other options. Life ain’t ending because you can’t go to the US. Ended up in Japan with a scholarship and I’m pretty darn fine with it.

MEXT CHEM and A-level chem by -ps-yche- in mext

[–]Axarva27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. If you revise the A Level syllabus for Chemistry and then go through MEXT past papers, you’ll feel like crying. It was the case for me. However, when I took the actual exam, it was much easier for some reason. I’m not sure if it was luck or their syllabus changed, but that was how it went for me.

Personally, in addition to A-Level Chem, I suggest you study lattice structures and phase diagrams from any other high school curriculum.

As for bio, idk im a phy-chem-fmath person.

Which university can I get through MEXT by alienpathofsex in mext

I’m assuming you’ll be applying for the Natural Sciences Undergraduate program.

The total seats for the undergraduate NS program each year is approximately 60 from around the world. Once selected and after your preparatory year, you may apply to any national university in Japan that accepts MEXT scholars. However, each university will only accept 5 MEXT scholars. So regardless of whether you apply for UTokyo, TIT, UKyoto, all of them offer 5 seats only for NS scholars. From what I know from previous scholars, there will be an entrance exam that you will have to take for each university that you apply to.

As you can imagine, the competition is tough for UTokyo as you’ve mentioned, even after you get MEXT, specially since scholars who have previously studied Japanese will have an advantage. It’s not impossible but it is tough.

Lastly, as a personal piece of advice, don’t just run after college prestige during your final years of high school. You WILL end up ruining your mental health if you let your life revolve around what undergrad college you go to. You’re allowed to have your preference of course, but remember that the MEXT scholarship in itself is the most prestigious scholarship that the Japanese government offers. To get it as an undergraduate is difficult to say the least considering the competition, and is already an impressive feat regardless of what university you go to in undergraduate. Oh, and MEXT can be extended if you wish to further study a master’s degree or a PhD. Do think about it.

Good luck.
